Hard work pays off for Dhanji (FIJI)
Winners of the Fiji FA 5-a-side league
Three years of hard work finally paid off for the Dhanji Boys Futsal soccer side.
The team, 90 per cent of which consists of players from Dhanji Street in Suva, won the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Sun Insurance/Diven P Sharma 5-a-side League competition last Wednesday.
The youngest player in the team, a secondary school student, Vineet Nadan scored the lone goal in extra time to beat Northpole in the final at the Vodafone Arena by 1-0.
Team manager Shameet Kumar said his team reached the semi-finals for the past two years and was desperate of a win this year.
“In the quarter-finals we beat last year’s winner Friends United by 3-1 to reach the semi-finals,” Kumar said.
“And in the semi-final, we beat United Pacific who were last year’s semi-finalists as well and the team we beat in the final (Northpole) was another semi-finalist from last year,” he said.
The side won $600 prizemoney which he said would be used for the team’s development.
“We used to train at the Vodafone Arena and National Gymnasium and we used to pay court fees from our own pockets. But with the $600, we can save some money and use this prizemoney to pay for the use of facilities for us to train.”
Kumar said the main aim of the team was to help their players qualify for the national futsal team.
“Most of the teams we beat to win this title had the services of former national futsal reps and this shows the potential and talent we have in our side.”
