Coffs Coast Kicking Off with New Development Officer (NSW)
Robert Watkin generating interest and momentum for Futsal around Coffs
08 August, 2012
In 57 years it’s fair to say that Robert Watkin has seen and done it all. But he has been pleasantly surprised recently with a new love.
That love is the sport of Futsal. “I consider myself a massive sports nut and always have been but I have only recently become involved with Futsal after a long history with Football (soccer) and I am really enjoying the fresh approach the sport takes.”
Robert was introduced to the world of football from a young age by his dad who was one of the first ever Australian-born men to play for the Socceroos on an international stage.
He recently managed a local Premier League football side in Coffs Harbour but now he’s turned his concentration to developing the sport of Futsal in the area.
“I’ve lived in the Coffs Region for 30 years and the effort hasn’t been put into the region to build interest in Futsal but I think the time is ripe to turn that around.”
Robert has used the last few months to generate interest and momentum in Futsal by hounding the streets, approaching businesses and schools and increasing community awareness in the sport.
But now the groundwork is underway he believes a number of social competitions are less than a month from kicking off for the first time in the region.
These include a school comp, over 35s and local business social competitions. But Robert’s biggest plan is taking advantage of Coffs Harbour’s booming conference scene. Working together with the Coffs Catholic Club Robert hopes to start a ‘Futsal Conference Package’ where people can take the morning off from their business conferences, play futsal, have lunch and return to the conference invigorated and refreshed. The activity will be an important team building exercise as part of the conference.
