Mater Maria’s soccer program is on the rise if results in 2012 are anything to go by.
Having won the 11-a-side Peninsula Cup earlier this year, the college’s open boys futsal squad reached the semi-finals of a recent Football NSW state tournament in Penrith.
Group wins against Newcastle’s Callaghan College (2-1), Norwest Christian College (4-1) and Illawarra Grammar School (3-1) saw them top their pool.
Next up they beat St John’s High School 3-2 in a feisty quarter-final before bowing out to eventual winners Endeavour Sports High 6-1 in the semis.
In addition to winning the regional Football NSW futsal tournament prior to the state tournament, the college achieved a unique treble in outdoor soccer.
In June the senior boys won the Peninsula Cup against Oxford Falls Grammar School having topped the table during the regular competition.
The team also won the Broken Bay Diocese Secondary Schools Sports Association gala day and secured the St Paul’s Catholic College/Mater Maria Challenge Cup for the first time since its inception in 2010.
Coach Nigel Benton felt the number of trophies won the past few months was remarkable.
“Their achievements are a credit to the work they put in,” he said. “The boys held their own, often competing against all the odds.”
