Adel al Shamery will call Rio de Janeiro home for the next three weeks after being called up to the national futsal team for a tour of Brazil.
The 18-year-old from Winston Hills was selected in the Vikings’ 16-man squad after impressive performances for Arthur Phillip High School at the state championships.
Adel’s 12 goals helped his school reach the semi-finals and caught the eye of national team selectors.
He will now visit the Brazil’s famed national team Granja Comary training ground and tour academy facilities at top-flight club Atletico Mineiro.
“It will be an honour to represent my country in Brazil who are renowned for their skills in both futsal and football,” Adel said.
“I’m pretty nervous to be going on my first international tour but hopefully I can show the coach some more of my skills and keep scoring goals.”
National futsal selection has come quickly for Adel, who made the switch from football in September.
The year 10 student was introduced to the sport through a Vikings regional school tournament last year. He had instant success, scoring 16 goals.
“We were offered the futsal opportunity through school and I jumped at the opportunity to become involved,” Adel said.
“I still play outdoor under 16s football with Rydalmere FC in the Granville Association.”
