Nico Schmittmann working with Vikings Futsal on the Gold Coast
After 22 years of being involved with the Gold Coast over 35s soccer competition, Nico Schmittmann was ready for a new challenge. The 63 year old started with Futsal Australia in July and is sure to bring a wealth of knowledge across from his days involved with Gold Coast Soccer.
“It’s a different challenge, a smaller sporting community but in my opinion a far more exciting product,” says Schmittmann.
While soccer in Australia is generally played as a more ‘English-styled’ game of long passing and big kicks, Futsal introduces the Spanish/South American style.
“It’s a more direct, short, skilful game. It’s faster but you don’t have to run as much.”
But developing the game around the Gold Coast hasn’t been a walk in the park. Nico says the sport is in a rebuilding phase on the Gold Coast but there are positive signs ahead.
“The biggest challenge has been securing venues already being utilised by other sports but we’re making ground. It’s been tough but I think because the sport is so exciting it’s only a matter of time before it starts to grow.”
“We’re taking an approach which emphasises looking after our members and hopefully letting their satisfaction with our product spread positive things about our competitions thus growing the sport. The feedback so far has been amazing!”
