ACT Men’s Futsal Premier League Round 8 Report and Highlights

Classy Weston Creek dispose of lacklustre Boomerangs

Weston Creek Timberwolves looked far from a side circling in the depths of the Capital Futsal Premier League when it completed a 9-2 dismantling of a struggling Boomerangs FS White outfit at the AIS on Thursday.

Tony Aleksovski was in dazzling form for the Timberwolves as he made easy work of securing a hat-trick, while Ben Harrington, Jeff Noja and Ian Elliot all bagged braces during the rout.

Michael De Marco and Josh Calabrla notched up the losing side’s two goals, but their contributions had little impact on what was a commanding display from start to finish by Weston Creek.

The round eight result elevates Weston Creek to sixth place on the ladder, while it consigns Boomerangs to an eighth straight defeat and leaves the battling side without a win so far this term.

Boomerangs looked frail from the outset, inviting Weston Creek to launch continuous attacking assaults and a glittering Aleksovski caused the opposition defence all kinds of trouble with his crafty passing game.

It was only fitting that Aleksovski was instrumental in his side’s first goal. The Weston Creek man turned possession over deep in the Boomerangs half before sliding a pass to Harrington, who duly guided his left-footed effort home.

Weston Creek extended its lead just moments later and it was Aleksovski headlining the act once more. He skilfully pinched the ball from Calabrla and evaded his trackers before delivering a perfectly timed ball to Elliot to tap in for a 2-0 lead.

A resolute defensive showing from Weston Creek denied its opposition any clear-cut opportunities on goal. Boomerangs man Ben Pagett tried his luck from distance multiple times, but his efforts were comfortably dealt with by Jamie Richardson in the Timberwolves goal.

Boomerangs stopper Brad Ploughton enjoyed no such luck, although some suspect defending from his men in the field didn’t help his cause. Pagett was particularly culpable when he allowed Harrington too much space on the right flank. The Weston Creek man gathered an exquisite back-heel pass from Grant Davoren and his blistering left-footed strike from out wide found the back of the net to extend his side’s lead to 3-0.

The onslaught only worsened for Boomerangs from that point. Aleksovski slotted a mid-range effort past Ploughton before tapping in Harrington’s deflected shot to give his side a commanding 5-0 lead and spark a flurry of goals in the shadows of half time.

Noja capped a classy exchange of passes with a neat finish into the top right and Elliot drilled a low effort into the bottom of the Boomerangs goal. A slight defensive lapse from Weston Creek though, allowed De Marco to link up with Pagett and get his side on the score card, but the Boomerangs man’s strike did little to worry Weston Creek as it entered half time with a 7-1 lead.

The second half was somewhat tighter, with only three goals between the two sides coming from it. Aleksovski was unlucky not to complete his hat-trick as early as the first minute of the second when his strike from close-range hit the woodwork.

Noja ensured the scoreboard continued to tick over though, when he calmly finished off an efficient one-two play with Davoren. Calabrla managed to pull one back for Boomerangs with his shot from an acute angle deflecting off Harrington and bouncing over the line to make the score line 8-2. His effort was in vain though, with Weston Creek responding immediately through Aleksovski. The Weston Creek man sent a low shot fizzing passed Ploughton to secure the hat-trick and give his side a 9-2 victory.
