ACT Women’s Futsal Premier League – Round 6
Belconnen United victorious over Tuggeranong
Belconnen United consolidated their spot in the top three of the Women’s Premier League, defeating Tugeranong United 2-1. The game was fast paced from start to finish, and although there were no goals scored in the second half, the game never looked over until the final whistle. From the opening minutes both teams seemed intent on creating meaningful chances through counter-attack futsal, yet it was Belconnen who held the majority of possession throughout the early stages.
Belconnen were able to choke their opponents out completely and eventually drew first blood when Jessica McEwan tapped in a ball right on the goal line after teammate Maja Blasch blasted the ball towards Tuggeranong’s goals. The goal did nothing to diminish the spirit of Tuggeranong however, as the Greens picked up their pressure on the ball and started to create chances of their own.
Their persistence paid off soon after, with Annica Schoo putting the ball in the back of the net after some great lead up play from the back of the court, giving Tuggeranong an even keel from which to attack again.
Unfortunately for Tuggeranong the 1-1 scoreline was shortlived, when Maja Blasch got her name on the score sheet after earlier providing the assist, hammering home the mid-range ball after the Green’s Goal Keeper Jocelyn Mara was wrong footed inside her area. From then on the game evolved into a free-flowing, end-to-end shot fest in which both teams tried everything to find the back of the net.
Every counter-attack from Tuggeranong seemed to come via a long throw from the Goal Keeper through to Shontelle Hellyer, who was one-on-one with her opponent just in front of the goals. It did not result in a second half equaliser but Hellyer went very close on occasion, flipping the ball with the back of her foot.
Tuggeranong threw everything they had at Belconnen United looking for the leveler, but a stoic performance in goal by Jessica Giovanazzo denied the Greens from getting the tieing goal. However, they could not get the second goal required to secure points, as the scoreline remained as it was in the first half, with Belconnen United holding Tuggeranong scoreless in the second half to record the 2-1 victory.
