Qantas Futsalroos have defeated the Solomon Islands 7-0 in an international friendly at the Logan Metro Insports Centre in Queensland.

The match was the Qantas Futsalroos last on Australian soil before departing for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand.

With the Solomon Islands also qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup as the Oceania representatives, the friendly was set-up to be a competitive outing for both teams.

The first half was a tight affair with a single goal to Qantas Futsalroo Daniel Fogarty in the opening minute the only difference between the two teams going into the break.

The second half was dominated by the Qantas Futsalroos who scored six unanswered goals with Fogarty scoring his second of the match and Greg Giovenali, Edmund Niski, Danny Ngaluafe, Fernando De Moraes and Keenan Duimpies all playing their part with a goal each.

Qantas Futsalroos captain Greg Giovenali was very pleased how with his team performed on the eve of the final squad selection.

“Although the score was in our favour, the biggest positive to come out of the match was that our defensive effort was very strong.  If we had of had any lapses, a team like the Solomon Islands would have punished us and to our credit we didn’t have any tonight ,” said Giovenali.

“We also had some good patches in attack and capitalized on them as well.

“Tonight’s match was a good stepping stone as we build for the World Cup. We all played well as a team, the players stood up to the challenge, it was a solid performance and equally as important we didn’t sustain any injuries.

“I’m sure that the players have made the coach’s job of selecting that final squad as difficult as possible, but I’m confident that whoever he selects will do Australia proud in Thailand,” concluded Giovenali.

Qantas Futsalroos Head Coach Steven will select and name his final squad for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012 next week and will then depart for Bangkok on Saturday 20 October for final preparations.

The Qantas Futsalroos have been drawn in Group D of the FIFA Futsal World Cup along with Argentina, Mexico and Italy (see attachment for match schedule).

All Qantas Futsalroos matches at the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2012 will be broadcast live on SBS Two (seewww.sbs.com.au for broadcast details).
