The 19 years girls and boys and the 16 years girls futsal teams competed at the Australian Champion of Champions Futsal competition held at Beenleigh over the weekend (Nov 10 & 11). All teams performed incredibly well under some very difficult circumstances. 16 years Girls The 16 years girls had four preliminary games to qualify for the finals.

The girls teams at Beenleigh.

The girls started strongly and stayed in control to take the game 3-1. (Danika Blackburn 1, Sam Barker 1 and Brie Thomas 1). They followed this strong display with another  very good win 7-4 over Kelvin Grove SHS from Brisbane. (Danika Blackburn 2, Hannah Taylor 2, Hannah Rees 2 and Brie Thomas 1). The third game brought them up against St Monica’s from Cairns. This game proved to be one of those where things don’t go to plan, St Monica’s taking the game 4-1 ( Jess Marks 1).

This meant the final game against Kellyville HS from Sydney the girls had to draw or win to make to top two. Despite an absolutely amazing game (the best of the competition) the ball had trouble finding the net. At 2-3 ( Jess Marks 1 and Hannah Rees 1) with a minute to go the girls looked like they could even up the game, but it wasn’t to be. So even though they finished equal second they missed out on the position in the semi on goals for. The eventual grand finalists were St Monica’s and Kellyville the only two teams to beat us. Again this was a great team effort with Danika Blackburn and Jenny LaSpada stand out players. Unfortunately, we lose these great two players next year as they move on from school.

Overall Bellingen HS had a lot to be proud of with great teamwork and a great display of sportsmanship across all three teams. Finally it was an absolute pleasure to take away these wonderful young people and thanks to all the parent helpers that made this possible. Thanks also to all the businesses and community groups, in particular, Community Transport and Bellingen Diggers Swimming Club, that have supported the players that have enabled them to afford this great experience.
