Globetrotters who won the Copper Coast Futsal tournament are, back, from left, Tory Caputo (coach), Ben Higginbottom, Daniel Cox, Matthew LoBasso. Front, from left, James Capurso, Nathan Brook (goalkeeper) and Daniel DeGiglio.

Local indoor soccer team the Pirie Globetrotters took home the grand final prize after competing in the annual Copper Coast Futsal tournament held at Kadina on Saturday, November 24.

The Globetrotters lost only one game in the tournament, now in its second year running, playing Port Augusta A in the grand final where they defeated them 3 – 2.

The grand final was a close game, but it was mostly dominated by the Globetrotters as Ben Higginbottom and Daniel DeGiglio put the team up two goals at half time.

The game didn’t change early in the second half until Ben Higginbottom scored a second goal to make it 3-0.

With the last three minutes to play, the game seemed all but won.

But, two late goals from Port Augusta made things a lot more difficult for the Globetrotters causing a nervous last minute.

They held on during the last 60 seconds to win the final 3-2.

The Globetrotters were all very happy with the overall result – winning 4 games in a row after losing their opening match and clearly being the youngest team in the tournament made the achievement seem that much greater.

The team was formed by a group of friends from the Northern Demons Soccer Club consisting of Tory Caputo (coach), Nathan Brook (goalkeeper), James Capurso, Daniel Degiglio, Matthew LoBasso, Daniel Cox and Ben Higginbottom.

The Pirie Globetrotters Futsal team formed in 2011 when the Virtus Soccer Club received an invitation to compete in the tournament.

The younger players of the club decided to take on the opportunity and make the most of it.

This year was the Globetrotters second year competing, finishing runner-up behind Port Augusta A last year. While they don’t train for this particular event, the Globetrotters try to use Northern Demons pre-season training as a way of preparing for it.

All of the Futsal team play for Northern Demons and compete in only the Copper Coast tournament.

While this tournament does not lead onto another one, the Globetrotters will look into and decide whether to nominate for further tournaments around the state.
