A total of six teams will compete in the six weeks competition at the Victoria Courts in Suva.

Co-ordinator for the southern division and Lami Womens Football Association president Ana Seru said they are hoping to get more women involved in soccer.

“The league is just an initiative of a few female coaches to try and develop and attract more women in all categories from under-16 years, under-17 years, under-20 and the senior grade to come and play soccer,” she said.

“It’s also an awareness for women to have a mind-set and broaden their knowledge of what soccer is all about and excel in the sport since it’s a male dominated sport.”

She said the sport would help the girls improve mentally, spiritually and physically.

“Women’s soccer in Fiji is not so imminent, so I am encouraging all women out there despite of their age to come and experience what soccer is all about, learn from the best and excel in the sport,” Seru said.

However, she added they would stick to the six teams and if more teams want to join the league, they would have to wait for the new round to start.

Today’s games will see Seals face the Grasshoppers, U16 Green will play U16 Blue and the Delta Tigers will take on Tornados.
