Boomerangs FS took a stranglehold on the top of the Women’s Futsal Premier League table following their 4-0 victory over fellow front-runners Weston-Molonglo El Diva in Round 6 of the competition played on the International Court at the ANU Sports Centre. Boomerangs were always in control of the match and a double from Brittany Palombi, moving her on to eleven goals for the season, had them in good shape. Sarah Crittenden and Erin Clout also netted as El Diva came looking for a way back into the match but the favourites appeared in ominous form, sounding a title warning to their challengers.
Canberra FC took advantage of Weston-Molonglo’s defeat to move above their rivals and into second place on the ladder but they were made to work exceptionally hard for the three points by bottom of the table Tuggeranong United before winning 4-3. United played their best game of the season to date and goals by Ashley Hare and Katherine McFadyen, added to by an own goal, gave them a scent of victory. But Rachael Goldstein was in superlative form for Canberra FC, bagging a hat-trick to go to seven goals for the season, and with Amanda Dries also netting FC held on to take the maximum return.
Kids FC eased into fourth spot on the ladder, with games in hand on those above them, as they saw off a plucky Monaro Panthers 8-1. The Panthers were very much in the match at the break, trailing only 1-3 having scored their first goal of the season through Vanh Manthongsy. Kids FC upped the temp after the break and, led by a four goal haul from recently crowned Premier League Reserve Player of the Year Madelyn Whittall, stormed away with the match. The experienced Hayley Buckingham was the architect of much that was good for Kids FC, creating chances and scoring a brace and there were also goals from Najwa Allen and Emma Beaumont in a dominant display.
Belconnen United were equally convincing in their 12-1 win over Woden Valley in the final match of the evening as the Blue Devils cruised to victory over their young opponents in a one-sided encounter. Erica Weatherly led the way with four goals for Belconnen and there were doubles for Maja Blasch, Samantha Price and Nicole Jalocha. Jessica McEwan and Canberra United player Snez Veljanovska also found the target against the beleaguered Woden. To their credit the youthful Valley side kept battling to the end and produced some excellent passages of play with their consolation goal from Alexandra Cook well merited.
