AFC Futsal C’ship 2014 (Qs): Australia 6-1 Vietnam
Bangkok: Daniel Fogarty’s hattrick set up Australia’s title clash against Thailand as the Futsalroos defeated Vietnam 6-1 in the semi-final of the AFC Futsal Championship 2014 Asean Zone qualifiers at the Bangkok Thonburi University on Friday.
The Futsalroos will take on the hosts on Sunday after Thailand convincingly thrashed Indonesia 11-3 in another semi-final held early on Friday.
Fogarty showed his intent from the beginning after putting the Futsalroos 1-0 ahead as early as in the 3rd minute and when he completed his hattrick by adding two goals in the space of one minute in the 35th and 36th minute, there were goals from Gregory Giovenali, Adam Cooper and Dean Lockhart.
The next year’s finals host Vietnam will have to make a lot of progress as only Tran Hoang Vinh was able to score for them in the 27th minute. The Vietnamese will face Indonesia in the third-place playoff match on Sunday.
Australia topple Vietnam at AFF futsal champs
Australia destroyed Vietnam 6 – 1 in a semi-final match of the ASEAN football Federation’s Futsal Championships on October 25.
Vietnam started the match with energy, but it was Australia who grabbed the early lead in the third minute when Daniel Fogarty slammed in the rebound off a freekick from Tobias Seeto.
Six minutes later, Australia were two goals up with an exquisite chip from Fernando de Moraes, before Adam Cooper (16th minute) and Gregory Giovenali (19th minute) made it 4 – 0 at half time.
Vietnam managed to pull a goal back from a power play when Tran Hoang Vinh scored in the 27th minute, but Australia put the game to bed with two more goals from Fogarty in the 35th and 36th minutes.
Vietnam will play Indonesia in the third-place play-off match on October 27. Australia will play Thailand in the final.
Futsalroos semi-final success
The Futsalroos have defeated Vietnam 6-1 to set up a clash against hosts Thailand in the final of the AFF Miracle of Life Futsal Championship 2013.
Vietnam were eager at the start of the match but it was Australia who grabbed the lead early in the third minute when Daniel Fogarty slammed in the rebound off a freekick from Tobias Seeto.
Six minutes later and Australia were two goals up with an exquisite chip from Fernando de Moraes as Adam Cooper (16th minute) and Gregory Giovenali (19th) then made it 4-0 at the half.
With one leg in the final, the Australians were more patient after the break as Vietnam grew more desperate.
While Vietnam managed to pull a goal back from a power play when Tran Hoang Vinh scored in the 27th minute, the move also proved risky when Australia capitalised to score two more goals at the end. Fogarty completed his hat-trick with goals in the 35th and 36th minute.
Futsalroos coach Steve Knight was pleased his side had won through to the final considering their limited preparation for the tournament and was glad his tactics paid off.
“Vietnam are definitely more organised as they have a year-long program as compared to us who only train once a week,” said Knight.
“The plan was to shut down several of their offensive play and then pressure them. It worked and we are in the final.”
