Rising soccer star Layla Lopez has become a force in front of the net.

The 11-year-old goalkeeper was selected for the under-12 Victoria Futsal Squad, which will compete in Canberra next month.

And while spots are limited for keepers in the team, the goalie has well and truly earned her place.

In her second season at the Melbourne Knights, based in Sunshine North, she is the No.1 keeper for the girls under-12 team.

As well as outdoor soccer, the St Catherine’s Primary School grade 5 student also plays indoor futsal for the Soccer Rising Stars.

Mum Natalia said soccer was a five-day-a-week commitment for Layla.

“She loves it. She trains twice for outdoor and plays Sundays, and trains once for indoor and plays Fridays,” Ms Lopez said.

“She’s made really good friends. She wants to represent Australia as a goalkeeper (when she’s older).”

Layla was introduced to the sport when her brother Orlando, 7, wanted to play.

The family went down to the Soccer Rising Stars, and when Layla saw there was a girls team, she immediately took interest.

Ms Lopez said she’s very proud of her daughter.

“She said, ‘Mum, it’s good enough I made it this far,'” Ms Lopez said.

“I’m probably biased being her mum but I think she’s wonderful.”

The 34th FFA Futsal National Championships will be held in Canberra from January 7-11.
