ACT Womens Premier League – Round 14 Review

Logo - ACT Capital Football Futsal (PNG)The final round of Women’s Futsal Premier League action this week will decide the top four places and the semi-final line-up with both Canberra FC and Weston-Molonglo El Diva in the firing line for the vital fourth place finish. With Kids FC likely to topple bottom of the table Monaro Panthers to secure a place in the four, all eyes will be on El Diva’s clash with unbeaten Boomerangs FS with El Diva needing a win as Canberra FC are favourites to gather all three points in their match with Tuggeranong United.

The teams are in this situation having played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in their Round 14 fixture played last week. In a ding-dong match that could have gone either way, honours were even at the final whistle with nothing able to separate two evenly matched protagonists. Canberra FC was indebted to a double from Rachael Goldstein and a single goal from Nicola Orgill to earn a point whilst Clare Munro, Kim Smith and Nicole Somi fought back for El Diva who knows they have their work cut out if they are to qualify.

The Boomerangs made it fifteen from fifteen with a 4-1 win over Woden Valley in their match as they conserved energy for their semi-final contest in a fortnight’s time. As usual the passing and movement of the Boomerangs was first class and the Woden youngsters, try as they might in a valiant display, couldn’t match the leaders. Georgia Fogarty netted for Woden but both Ashleigh Palombi and Brittany Palombi scored to move to thirty goals for the season for Boomerangs and further strikes from Michelle Aurousseau and Erin Clout sealed the win.

Belconnen United remains in second place heading into the final round after they defeated ANU Vogue 3-1but could be caught by Kids FC who has a game in hand. Brittany Smale was on target twice for the Blue Devils as she eased onto sixteen goals for the season and ensured Belconnen at least had the chance to remain in the top two if they win their final game of the season against Woden Valley and Kids FC drop some points. A sixth goal of the season from Maja Blach made sure of the positive result for Belconnen with Annica Schoo ending ANU Vogue’s 2013 Futsal Premier League season with her tenth of the year.

Kids FC meanwhile put themselves into pole position to end the season second after they saw off Tuggeranong United 5-2. And with games to play against Monaro Panthers and Tuggeranong again in the last Round, they will be hot favourites to end the season behind the Boomerangs. Laura Sofoulis scored twice for Kids FC, she now has thirteen goals to her name, whilst Najwa Allen, Samantha Wood and Lauren Keir added to the tally, keeping Kids FC far enough ahead so that they weren’t troubled by Tuggeranong’s replies from Sian Parker and Dianne Wilson.
