Temataho communities in Marau Sound, East Guadalcanal have celebrated this New Year festive with a three-day futsal tournament held at Makina Catholic Parish from 30th December 2013 to 1st January 2014.
The event saw five communities gathered together with a total of 15 teams, and took part in pool matches as part of this new year fun and celebration.
Head of organizing committee, Jessey Kolivangana said the aim of organizing the tournament was to gather young people to converge in one area, and to have this game as a New Year festive fun.
He added that another purpose was also to promote futsal in that rural locality, seeing that only soccer tournaments were usually held there.
“So far, no Futsal games were held here.
“I decided to step in to organize this in order to promote this game in this particular area as it is a growing sport in our country.”
The games were organized in two categories, open category for young and old, and under-14 category with no fees and winners were awarded with little cash prizes prepared by the organizing committee as part of fun and celebration.
Manguru futsal club of Savekau community scooped the first prize for the open category.
Temataho community leader, Cyril Kulisuia said that the successful completion of the tournament demonstrated cooperation by the communities.
Mr. Kulisuia also emphasized that sport is one important development in communities and that he was happy that the tournament was completed successfully and peacefully without disturbances.
Temataho Paramount chief, Elia Olimalau thanked the organizers for hosting the event and stated that the togetherness demonstrated peaceful co-existence within communities.
Godfrey Sautahi, a team captain of one of the teams stood on behalf of the participating teams and thanked the organizers, officials and players for their hard work, time and commitment and encouraged players to uphold good sportsmanship.
Meanwhile, Captain and coach of the Winning team, James Manekari also thanked the organizers and said that he was happy with the achievement of his team.
