The National Futsal Championships were held in Canberra from Monday 13 January to Friday 17 January 2017.
Football Federation SA’s Athletes with Disability (AWD) team returned from the Championships tired, but upbeat. Despite not gaining any points in the week long tournament, the boys enjoyed the experience and gained plaudits for their refusal to give in and for their exemplary sportsmanship, something that was commented on by both organisers Capital Football and opposition coaches.
The boys gradually reduced the number of goals conceded and started to score goals each game. National AWD and NSW Thunders Coach Greg Brown also lifted the spirit of our players by stating how well they did with so little preparation and reminiscing about the beginnings of the national AWD Futsal team who also started with a series of difficult results, and again, commenting on the SA boy’s fantastic discipline, enthusiasm and commitment.
On the final day the boys visited the War Memorial which had a profound effect on them and then took in the final where ACT defeated NSW Thunder 2-1.
All in all, it was a memorable trip and one which has generated enthusiasm for a permanent AWD Futsal League here in South Australia.
Special thanks to the team at Capital Football, Canberra Boys Grammar School, all the participating teams, coaches and managers, Annette at SASRAPID, and Team Manager Paul Eichner.
