Football Federation Tasmania will be represented at the 2014 National Futsal Championships from January 13 to 17, with two teams attending the Championships in Canberra.
A 12 Boys and a 13 Boys team and an Athletes With Disabilities (AWD) team will compete for four days in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and MPower Dome against representative teams from all other member Federations.
The Male squads were selected from the Devonport Region, with Ian Davies organising and managing the squads whilst interstate.
John Alexiou will coach the 12 Boys and Richard Bidwell will be in charge of the 13 Boys for the duration of the tournament.
The squads have prepared well and have been in training for the past eight weeks.
“Our Under 12 and Under 13 Boys have done all necessary preparation and are ready and raring to go for a big championship,” said Futsal Manager Dale Itchins
Both of the squads departed from Launceston on Saturday to acclimatise to the hot conditions in Canberra forecast for the entire week of the competition.
The AWD Squad was selected from the Launceston region and it is the first time Tasmania has been represented in this division.
“It is great to have an AWD team for the first time, representing our state at the Futsal National Championships,” said Itchins.
The selection process and training has been under way since August of this year and are linked with the New Horizons Club which offers Sport & Recreation opportunities for people with disabilities in the Launceston area.
Belinda Kitto from New Horizons will take charge of the team in Canberra, which will compete at the AIS.
“We wish all competing teams a successful and enjoyable experience at the National Championships and hope to see some great results for Tasmania,” said Itchins.
