Mackay’s Under-21 youth girls team impressed Mackay Futsal’s Germano Ribeiro and their coach Jack Kelly with the performance they put in at the Futsal National Championships in January.

Ribeiro said the team exceeded expectations by making it into the semi-finals.

Not only did they make it, they went through the pool games undefeated against six teams after training together for only about two months.

“The girls, I knew they did have a pretty good team,” Ribeiro said.

“They played more with their hearts than with their bodies.”

He said Katie Muscat could barely walk properly, let alone run, and still managed to win the golden boot with 16 goals.

Kristen Predebon was also named in the All Stars team.

The team went down in the semi-final, missing out on the grand final and finishing the tournament in third place.

“There is nothing negative I could say about the tournament, what they did, how they worked,” coach Jack Kelly said.

“Plus they played during a heatwave, it got up to 43 degrees.

Considering he was called up two months ago to coach them, he also struggled with fielding a full team.

“Two girls from Gympie played for us and another girl didn’t turn up,” Kelly said.

Luckily, one of the girl’s knew someone on holidays in Newcastle who drove to Penrith to be goal keeper in the team.

Mackay also fielded a mixed U9 and Whitsundays U10 teams.

“Even if though they didn’t get the results, they were excited and loved the experience,” Ribeiro said.
