Colyton’s Erin is a natural on the field (NSW)

Erin Hill does well in Futsal and Outdoor

Erin Hill's soccer career is starting to take off.

Erin Hill's soccer career is starting to take off.

Colyton youth Erin Hill is proving hard work does pay off.

Erin, 14, was part of the victorious NSW side at the National Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) Football Championship hosted by Mamre Anglican College, Kemps Creek.

She was named player of the tournament.

She is also a scholarship student at the school as part of Mamre’s football development program.

Earlier this year, Erin played for NSW at the National Futsal Championship in Canberra.

Erin is this week’s St Marys Leagues Club-sponsored Mt Druitt-St Marys Standard Junior Sports Star nominee.

“Playing in the CSSA championship was big because it was the first time I represented NSW in outdoor soccer. It just felt like such an honour,” Erin said.

On the final day of the championship she took part in training sessions with current Matildas and W-League stars.

Erin said it was an invaluable experience.

“Normally it’s just guys teaching us (when we have training sessions) so it was really good experience to see what drills they do and to show us how far we can go as girls,” she said.

Erin plays for the under-14 PCYC Lady Hawks in the NSW Super League and for Mascot Vipers in the futsal premier league.

She said every bit of experience she can get in big games only makes her better and the futsal championships in Canberra have been a boon.

She said playing at the Australian Institute of Sport in front of a large crowd in a national event added a lot of pressure on her to perform but she was up to the task.

“I just tune it all out and play. Once I get out on the field and the whistle goes I just play,” she said.

Erin hopes to have a career in the W-League when she’s older and ideally would like to earn a spot in the Matildas.

Staggering rise in team nominations (NSW)

The Summer Futsal comp in Taree attracting plenty of team nominations

Team nominations for the summer futsal competition at Saxbys Stadium Taree have increased a staggering 60 percent on last year’s numbers, with nominations still coming in.

Futsal will now be played three nights per week as opposed to one night last summer.

Player registration continues tomorrow at Saxbys Stadium between 4.30-6.30 pm. The committee requires all players to register this week if they intend to play on the first night of the competition, starting September 15, 16 and 17. Draws will be posted to the website www.manningfutsal.com

B Division competition will now be played on Wednesday nights and has surpassed all expectations with nominations still being received, and is likely to be graded (B and C) after the first half of the draw. This competition has doubled in size warranting a separate night as youth and mixed teams enter to participate in the game.

On Thursday afternoon, once again due to the high number of team nominations, the 13/14 years competition will be graded after the first half of the draw and perhaps the 11/12 years also when all nominations are confirmed.

A Division and the women are once again strong with nominations still being accepted for Thursday night.

The 9/10 years competition is definitely starting on Friday afternoons, as well as a 13-15 girls competition for the first time. More nominations for both these competitions will be accepted. All girls are most welcome whether new or experienced soccer players. The eight years non-competitive tournament is coming together and will also be kicking off shortly on Friday afternoon.

A referees’ course started on Monday night not only boosting the number of referees available at Saxbys Stadium, but ensuring that games will be controlled by accredited FFA futsal referees who are up to date with the 2010 laws of the game. With futsal competitions being played over three nights during summer, a strong pool of officials will be needed to give good coverage and supply two referees per game.

About Futsal

Futsal is the only form of ‘indoor football’ or ‘five-a-side’ that is officially approved by FIFA and Football Federation Australia. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the world, is played in over 100 countries and boasts millions of players around the world.

The name “Futsal” comes from the merging of the Spanish/Portuguese words for football (Futbol or Futebol) and the French or Spanish word for “Indoor” (Salon or Sala). Following changes at international level between FIFA (Federation Internationale Football Association) and FIFUSA (Federation of Internationale De Futbol Sala) the sport became united with the outdoor version of the game, in 1989.

The game of Futsal is played on a firm, flat surface on a court ranging in size from that of a standard basketball court to the full FIFA International size of 40 x 20 metres. The special feature of the game is the unique properties of the ball, which has a low rebound. The game develops close individual ball skills as the court is small and players are forced into limited space & option scenarios.

Futsal was introduced to Australia in 1972 by Dawn Gilligan , then working at the Revesby YMCA. The year before was a wet soccer season and Dawn had heard about Futsal ‘indoor soccer’ and introduced it to the centre. The sport slowly spread to the other states

Games are usually fast-paced, with players receiving more touches and are constantly placed in demanding decision making, limited space situations that they would face on a greatly reduced scale playing 11-a side outdoor soccer. Because the sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing, it is an exciting game for children as well as adults.

International Futsal Challenge Update (QLD)

Two international teams have confirmed their positions in the October tournament in Cairns

Great News, for the Inaugural Gilligan’s International Club Futsal Challenge with 2 International Teams confirming their participation in this event. The event will take place from the 8th to the 10th on October 2010 in Cairns Australia

Japanese “Kobe University Futsal club FORCA“. This team is based in OSAKA and they are current champions of the Japanese University Futsal League and have been for the past 3 years, they will be in Cairns for a week and apart from competing in this tournament they will also be taking in some of the great tourist attractions in Cairns and FNQ.

The second team to confirm is South Korea’s Club team “Mustang Futsal Club“. This is a relatively new club in Seoul, but have a large contingent of strong players that have been playing Futsal at the highest level for the past 2 years, the Clubs Manager Su il Byun is very excited to be a part of this tournament and is looking forward to forming a strong relationship with Northern Australia Futsal and the other countries and teams competing.

There has also been a large number of Australian Clubs nominate for this event with 1 Club team from Victoria, 2 from Western Australia, 2 from Brisbane and Sunshine coast and we will have at least 3 local teams including the Northern Australia Futsal Stingrays, the Stingrays are a representative side made up of players from all over North Queensland, from as far as Mackay and through to Cairns, this team will hopefully get the backing of the locals and hopefully boost their chances of winning the title, however there will be a strong contingent of very good teams with some having Australian FUTSALROO’S players in their sides.

On other news some other International teams are in the process of sorting out their travel VISA’S to Australia if sorted in time teams from Solomon Islands, Colombia, Guatemala and Nigeria could also be competing in this fantastic event.

The biggest news for the region and event organizers FNQ Futsal, is the announcement that all games will be TELEVISED LIVE on the Internet through PAULTV.COM, all games will be available for anyone around the World that has access to the Internet, this is great news not only for the Tournament but also the region as local attractions will be shown during half time intervals and there will be pre and post match interviews with players, coaches and officials.

On other news, the Women’s event has been postponed to a later date so as not to interfere with top level player commitments from International teams as well as Australian Club teams.

Opportunities are still available to participate, for any club teams that wish to participate, you can contact Tournament organizer Tony Cifuentes on 0439 780 277 or via Email on tonyc@vikingsfutsal.net. and you can visit the web site: www.northernaustraliafutsal.com  for information

Futsal Champion of Champions (NSW)

A writeup on the Northern NSW Championships

The High School Champion Under 14 Futsal TeamThe Northern NSW futsal championships brings together the best two teams from each of the area trials from earlier in the year. The area covers from Port Macquarie in the south to the border and west to Armidale. The championships were held over two weeks to cater for all the teams and divisions and all the BHS girls teams had qualified so we were represented in all three age divisions.

The 14 years girls team lead by Jemara Imrie were inexperienced to start with but improved with every game. They had to play some games against 16 years teams as there were not as many 14 years teams. Their best results here were against Maclean HS (16), which they drew 0-0 and BDC (16) where they went down in a close encounter 2-3. Against the 14 years teams the results were much stronger defeating St Columba 4-0 and drawing with Westport 1-1. These results put them into the final against Westport, which was sure to be a close encounter. The final whistle blew and the score was 2-2 despite the girls dominating throughout. The game went into sudden death extra time, which deservedly saw Sam Barker make no mistake and the game was won. Throughout the day goals went to Jess Marks 1, Jemara Imrie 3, Bianca Mason 1 and Sam Barker 5. The next games for these girls is this Thursday against Coffs Harbour HS and Orara HS.

The 16 years team are a very talented team who as 14 year olds won the North Coast CHS Competition defeating Ballina HS 5-0 in the final. Most of the girls were also in the team that were runners-up at the Australian Futsal Championships last year in the 16 years team. They started strongly against Maclean HS playing a great passing game to win 6-4 (Maggie Mills 1, Jess Marks 1, Meg Roberts 1 and Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 3). This, however, proved to be their hardest game going through the preliminary games undefeated amassing 47 goals for (Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 19, Maggie Mills 7, Meg Roberts 9, Jess Marks 4, Danika Blackburn 4, Malynda Post 4) and 11 against. In the semi final the girls came up against Westport and smashed them 7-0 (Meg Roberts 2, Maggie Mills 2 and Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 3). The final brought the girls up against Maclean HS, however, this time running on tired legs and not having a hard game since the first game Maclean turned the tables and the girls went down 6-3 (Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 1, Maggie Mills 2). It was the first game where this team lost their passing game and resorted to pot shots. However, despite not getting the gold medal they deserved the girls still qualify to go to the Australian Championships at the Gold Coast in October as the top two teams automatically qualify. There will be an opportunity hopefully, to take out revenge on Maclean HS.

The 19 years girls had a tough draw to qualify for the Australian Championships as all the teams were quality teams. Their first game was against CCS who had defeated this team in the area final. It was therefore very pleasing to start the day with a solid win 4-2 (Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 2, Maggie Mills 1, Ruby Campbell 1). Immediately after this they followed up with another solid effort defeating Westport 4-2 (Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 2, Maggie Mills 1and Jemara Imrie 1). The third game against Duval HS proved another tough encounter with the passing game dominating 6-3 (Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 3, Maggie Mills 2, Jemma Boswell 1). The final preliminary game was against Wauchope HS who had knocked us out of the CHS Football Knockout competition in round 4, so it was particularly nice when the girls defeated them 7-1 (Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 4, Ruby Campbell 1, Sam Snow 1and Jemara Imrie 1). The girls then qualified for the major semi-final which if they won meant, they too would be going to the Australian Championships. They started on fire and by half time were up 4-0. A very happy and confident coach then put on some other combinations to see how they would work. Not a good idea against a team like Westport who can score from anywhere on the court. Very quickly Westport got back in the game and despite stabilising the team Westport were now full of confidence and continued to dominate. The full time score 4-4. Thankfully, in sudden death extra time Kanisha found the back of the net for the fifth time and we were in the grandfinal and heading to the Australian Championships. Westport defeated Duval in the final and we had to play Westport for the third time in the day! This time despite a great effort, injuries took their toll and the girls lost 4-3(Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 3). Again hopefully there will be an opportunity for revenge at the Gold Coast.

Overall an outstanding result for all the girls. BHS can be very proud of these young athletes.

Strikers Futsal News (VIC)

Junior Winter Champs announced and Strikers Mens squad off to a good start

JUNIOR WINTER SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS

U'10 -11 Winners - Gully United

Congratulations to the Gully United and Real Madrid squads for taking out their respective Championships after 22 rounds. Whilst Gully United comfortably finished ahead of the pack, Real Madrid had their work cut out, just finishing ahead of the 5 + 3 outfit. The two teams will be confident going into their finals campaign of getting continued success, but are aware that in a knockout cup anyone can beat anybody on the day. Both teams will be presented with their Cup and medals on Friday the 17th of September.

STRIKERS MENS TEAM START 2010 SUMMER CAMPAIGN WITH BIG WIN

On Friday the 3rd of Septemeber the Strikers Mens Futsal Team travelled to Cheltenham to play the Bayside Pirates in a friendly match. In an exciting development for Futsal in Melbourne the match was played under International Rules and court dimensions and with a stop-clock and timeouts. Special thanks goes out to the Bayside Pirates and in particular Mark Georgeson who helped organise the game.

The Strikers used this game as preparation for their tournament in Sydney in October where they will be playing some of the best club sides in Australia. The Strikers were at near full strength with only Ricardo Castro missing through illness and Husmir Ikanovic still overseas. Apart from a few early nerves and mistakes the Strikers were clearly the better side, winning the match by 20 goals to 8. Plenty of positives out of the game, with the performance of 41 year old veteran Ivan Zilic still showing that he is one of the best Futsal players in the state. Also pleasing was the team work leading up to the twenty goals scored. On the negative side the boys still conceded 8 goals, and in both halves conceded more than the maximum six fouls and accummulated a few yellow cards along the way. Defense and discipline is definetely an area the boys need to work on in the next few weeks.

The Strikers have two more games planned before the Sydney tournament. A home game to the Cobras on Saturday the 18th of September at 3pm and an away game to the AFG on Sunday the 26th of September at 6:30pm. All are welcome to come and watch.
