Gympie State High School has collected many achievements on the futsal court but has become a victim of its own success, leaving very little ground to break.

But a win to a Gympie High Year 8 futsal team in Brisbane a fortnight ago has ensured the school continues to reach new heights in the sport.

The representative team was invited to travel to Brisbane to compete in the 2010 Southern Queensland Champion of Champions Carnival, contested between August 2-6.

Against some extremely difficult opponents, the Gympie High Under-13 side claimed its age division with a grand final win over Toowoomba Grammar 3-2.

Coach Geoff Haig was thrilled with the result and level of dedication of the Gympie High boys.

“We have had other year levels go away and win at this event but this is the first time we have done with a Year 8 side,” he said.

“It was a long day against tough competition and some of the big schools but the boys played well.

“They showed plenty of staying power to play that many games and maintain their form.”

The road to the final was arduous for the Gympie High team, playing seven matches before taking to the court for glory.

From the seven games played, Gympie High had an enviable record of six wins and a draw. The draw (5-5) came in the third round against Helensvale State High School.

Gympie High enjoyed a winning start to its campaign in the first round against Xavier College, winning 5-3.

A commanding 5-1 victory followed against Toowoomba Grammar – Gympie High’s eventual final opponents.

Following the draw against Helensvale State High School, Gympie High marched on relentlessly to confront North Lakes College, winning 8-2.

The Gympie team created more carnage in the fifth round, showing plenty of endurance to punish Chancellor College 8-0.

Calvary College was then dismissed 6-0 while Aldridge State High School did well to manage two goals in a 6-2 whitewash to Gympie High.

The final itself against Toowoomba Grammar was a repeat of the second round clash and Gympie High found themselves under pressure to win by a single goal, 3-2.

Toowoomba revealed an ability to adapt its game and challenge the Gympie High team, throwing aside the lopsided 5-1 loss to Gympie in the second round.

Finalists from the Southern Queensland Champion of Champions Carnival are now invited to contest the Australasian Champion of Champions at Runaway Bay, on the Gold Coast, between November 19-21.

The Gympie High team will confront the top two teams from northern Queensland, northern New South Wales, southern New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory and New Zealand in a bid to be crowned Champion Futsal School in Australasia.

Queensland Winter Futsal League Update

Finals Just Around The Corner – Eagles the Juggernaut!

Queensland Winter Futsal LeagueRound 9 – 30 Jul 2010 RESULTS

Bayside Eagles 6 d Morayfield Rattlers 0
Gold Coast Tigers 7 d Youth Comets 1
Beenleigh 6 d Runaway Bay 2
Beenleigh 3 d Magic FC 0
Sunshine Coast Waves 6 d Runaway Bay 5
Youth Comets 6 d Gold Coast Utd 3
Gold Coast Tigers 3 d Magic FC 0
Bayside Eagles 9 d Sunshine Coast Waves 2

ROUNDUP & PREVIEW

With the finals of the Qld Winter Futsal League just 2 rounds away, the teams are really pressing to play finals series futsal.

League leaders Bayside Eagles continue to be a juggernaut. Bayside are undefeated to date. The have only one blemish, a draw to Gold Coast Utd in round 8, and an incredible record of 15 wins from 16 games.

The minor places in the finals may come down to a coin toss as Gold Coast Tigers and Beenleigh are continually matching each others pace going stride by stride all season long. Gold Coast Tigers are only ahead on goal difference, coming from a strong start to the season. However a run of injuries and player unavailability, has the tigers are struggling to hit the back of the net.

Gold Coast Utd may have sealed their fate to go against the minor premiers by finishing fourth with an unexpected loss to the Youth Comets. Gold Coast Utd were never in the game against the young Comets until late in the second half with a flurry of superb passes and fast counter attacking. Gold Coast Utd closed the gap to 3 goals but could not stop a hungry young group of players who finally after a horror run of injuries, finally filled a full strength side, and showed their much favoured opponents the class and skill the Youth develop side is known to posses.

Inconsistent efforts have plagued the Sunshine Coast Waves, Brisbane Magic FC and Morayfield Rattlers sides. At times all three teams have but together sublime performances against the leaders, however at times were outclassed and run down by the stronger teams in the league. Runaway Bay never got going this season. Unlike the other teams, The Bay never found a team harmony by constantly changing their starting lineup.

The next round may just be a rehearsal of the finals and decide where the top four finish. Bayside face 2nd place Gold Coast Tigers and third place Beenleigh, while Gold Coast Utd should over come Sunshine Coast and Morayfields. The next round will be played on the 13th August at the Beenleigh Arena. It is to be hoped that the number 13 wont prove unlucky for the finals placed teams. Their opponents will be hoping so!

Committee formed to get funding (QLD)

Mackay Futsal players show their support for upgraded multi-use facilities

Chatting about plans for a $9?million multi-use sports precinct at Candlestick Park are, from left, building committee chairperson Nigel Thomas, Mackay Netball president Lyn Law, head basketball coach Leonard King, Mackay Basketball president John Zelenka and Sporting Wheelies president Peter Sumpter. Picture Peter HoltMackay Basketball’s head coach Leonard King loves to see Candlestick Park packed with supporters during a big game, but the moment is marred by the disappointed eyes of the many fans that are turned away.

Keen to take advantage of the fight for Dawson’s marginal seat in the federal election campaign, the city’s basketball community has joined forces with Mackay Netball, the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association (SWDA) and Futsal players to pressure candidates into a $9 million show of support for a multi-use facility.

They will share their dream to redevelop the Bridge Road and Juliet Street site into five multi-sport courts with Federal Sport Minister Kate Ellis when she visits Mackay this morning.

The project’s building committee chairperson Nigel Thomas said the Mackay region desperately needed a modern complex which could host a range of sports and cater for a greater number of spectators.

The committee’s vision would see the existing stadium’s capacity doubled to 1200 to cater for major events and construction of three new indoor multi-sports courts to complement the site’s two indoor basketball courts.

Combined with high numbers of school students and social players, official club memberships of about 1000, 1100, and 160 for netball, basketball and the SWDA showed the project’s potential to improve the health and fitness of thousands of people in Mackay, Mr Thomas said.

It would also provide an all-weather venue that protected players from the sun, he said.

“It’s sorely needed to cater for the increasing population, to maintain and improve the participation in the various sports that we’re talking about and (to) allow us to grow into the future with the sports,” Mr Thomas said.

“More particularly, it will give us the ability to put back into the economy and the community with the financial benefits that flow through from greater participation, particularly the championships and the other elite sporting opportunities that come through.”

Mr Thomas said Cairns had four air-conditioned courts, Townsville’s Murray Stadium had five and Rockhampton’s stadium had three, leaving Mackay’s facilities for dust.

Labor candidate for Dawson Mike Brunker said he had spoken to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her deputy and treasurer Wayne Swan about the need for the project.

“I’ll be lobbying for their cause in the up and coming election,” Mr Brunker said yesterday.

“That’s one of my pet projects.”

LNP candidate George Christensen said he would see what he could do, however he couldn’t guarantee funding would be guaranteed before the August 21 election.

“But I have told them it’s something I’m willing to go in to bat for,” he said.

It’s sorely needed to cater for the increasing population…
