While not having finals, the U11s and U14s played some matches as a lead up to the grand finals. Max Tooze from Warooka Bombers was awarded best and fairest for the U11s, based on most umpire votes throughout the season.
The U14 winner was Dalrymple Dragons, r-up Warooka Benchwarmers; Lochie Varricchio (Dalrymple Dragons) was best and fairest.

The eagerly-awaited men’s grand final did not disappoint and a hard and fast game between Grumpy Old Men and Phoenix had scores at three-all at the full-time siren. This necessitated playing extra time under the “golden goal” rule, meaning the first side to kick a goal is the winner. At the 12 second mark of extra time, Grumpy Old Men’s Eric Adams kicked a goal, causing his team to erupt in excitement! Dillan Wallace from Warooka Strikers was named as best and fairest for the season in the men’s competition.
The grand final night capped off a successful season for YP Futsal, with the club also retaining the country shield after winning against Jamestown in the carnival in all divisions.

Sorry kids, the cash is for elite sport (SA)
Opinion piece on the Campbelltown Leisure Centre in South Australia
In recent times the Federal Government has been spending money like a drunken sailor, handing out stimulus cash, questionable billions for school buildings and, of course, the home insulation fiasco.
If ever there was a reason for local government to run local things as opposed to Canberra it is the Campbelltown Leisure Centre farce.
In an area with precious few sports facilities, and virtually no vacant space to build them, Campbelltown Council and sports groups like Norwood Basketball Club, State Swim, Squash SA, Futsal SA, Volleyball SA and others developed a plan to turn the tired Campbelltown Leisure Centre into a 21st century sports facility.
A place where people actually played sport, not sat on their bums and cheered elite gladiators.
Those keen to improve life in the ‘burbs, including volunteers who put in hundreds of hours of unpaid work to develop the plan so a club like Norwood could finally have a home for its 50-plus teams, managed to raise $7.5 million towards the dream, and were banking on the Federal Government contributing.
But in distant Canberra, the answer was a cold no. Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese, from Sydney, whose closest association with Campbelltown would be with the suburb of the same name in Sydney’s south-west, kyboshed the plan.
Bad luck, kids. Bad luck adults. Bad luck for a swath of the east and north-eastern suburbs, plus the wider sports community who would have played home-and-away matches at the centre. In an era of obesity this is a glaring example of government out of touch with the community.
The Sunday Mail had hoped Sports Minister Kate Ellis might have something to say on the subject. After all, she is in a marginal federal seat with an election due. But she is watching elite sport in South Africa, where apparently mobile phones don’t work.
Sturt MP Christopher Pyne zeroed in on this like a hawk, promising the Coalition will find cash for the scheme if elected. His Labor opponent, Rick Sarre, also hopes to “progress the redevelopment”. Very worthy, but not good enough.
The pathetic thing about this is that it takes a looming election and a marginal seat to even rouse vague federal political interest in this development. And even then, Canberra’s interest is limited because most marginal seats are in Queensland. The Rudd Government needs to realise that some of the Big Picture visions are quite small – our children.
PS: Kate, when you get back from South Africa and the (very worthy, very valuable) Big Picture of winning the World Cup so thousands of spectators can sitting around watching elite athletes in multi-million-dollar stadiums, we’ll be asking you what you are doing to help kids in the east and north-east suburbs play sport.
Big plans for Campbelltown Leisure Centre (SA)
$15 million upgrade in South Australia still reliant on $7.5 mill of additional funding
Plans for a $15 million “state of the art” Campbelltown Leisure Centre include court space for basketball, futsal and volleyball, a 25m indoor heated pool and six squash courts.
A fitness area, dance studio, function room, cafe and office space are also in the redevelopment plans.
Designs for the Botanic Grove centre were presented to Campbelltown Council at its June 1 meeting after consultation with the Leisure Centre’s steering committee, centre users, State Swim and Squash SA.
The design will now go out to public consultation, with Mayor Simon Brewer saying it was “state of the art”.
“We’ve incorporated everything as much as possible, from playing spaces, to the size of the courts, storage, office spaces, off-court facilities and the cafe,” he said.
The council will contribute $2.5 million towards the upgrade, with the State Government pitching in $3 million and State Swim and Squash SA committing $1.5 million and $500,000 respectively.
The project now hinges on securing the remaining $7.5 million in federal funding, with the council still waiting to hear whether its submission has been successful.
“We just can’t afford to do an upgrade of that nature,” Mr Brewer said.
“It will be a sad day if it doesn’t come through.”
Arthur Di Fede, chairman of Futsal SA, said he’d met with designers and provided input into the plans.
“We wanted higher ceilings, larger courts and a grand stand viewing area so we could try and get more spectators along,” he said.
