Gepps Cross soccer push costed at $14.7m (SA)

News Soccer facility wanted in South Australia complete with Futsal courts

The Football Federation of South Australia wants funding for a new soccer facility at Gepps Cross in Adelaide.

It has been costed at $14.7 million and would have five soccer pitches, indoor futsal courts for a variation of the game and administrative offices.

Michael Carter from the Federation says land has been identified at the State Sports Park.

“The State Government owns the land and would need to offer that land to Football Federation SA,” he said.

“It’s absolutely pitched at sort of under 6s right through to our super league and may even be able to host international touring teams coming to Adelaide.”

Qantas Futsalroos Begin Preparations for AFC Championships Qualifiers

South Australia’s view on the recent Futsalroos announcement

Qantas Futsalroos Head Coach Steven Knight has selected South Australian Anthony Capaldi in a 18-player squad for a training camp to be held in Sydney between 24- 26 January 2010.

Knight will use the camp to help select a final squad of 14-players that will then head to Indonesia for the AFC Futsal Championship ASEAN Zone qualifiers which will be held in February.

This will be Knight’s first campaign as the Head Coach of the Qantas Futsalroos after serving as Assistant Coach to Scott Gilligan at the 2008 AFC Asian Cup.

Knight is excited by the prospect and confident that the group of players that he has selected will be able to do the job

“The group that we have selected are the in-form players from the last few months and recent FFA National Futsal Championships,” said Knight

“There are also a number of talented young players in the group who will benefit from the experience of being involved in the training and may even push for selection.

“A number of overseas-based players are also under consideration so for the players who attend at this training camp it will be their only opportunity to impress before the final squad is named,” concluded Knight

The AFC Futsal Championship ASEAN Zone qualifiers will take place from 20-25 February in Jakarta with the top three teams qualifying for the AFC Futsal Championships which will be played in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 23-30 May.

The Qantas Futsalroos have been drawn in Group A along with Indonesia and Myanmar, while Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Philippines make up Group B.

A decade of debt for Campbelltown Leisure Centre upgrade (SA)

South Australia will have a nice centre for Futsal, but at a cost to the tax payer

HOPEFUL: Norwood Flames president Peter Roberts hopes the Federal Govt will help fund the Leisure Centre upgrade. Picture: Noelle Bobrige H0286704

A $12 MILLION overhaul of the Campbelltown Leisure Centre will leave ratepayers in debt for at least 10 years – a price the council says will be worth it.

The upgrade of the Botanic Grove centre now hinges on securing federal funding after Campbelltown Council voted this month to proceed with the project despite a lack of State Government support at this stage.

The council sees the upgrade of the ageing leisure centre as so important, it is willing to go into debt for at least the next 10 years to fund its $6 million half of the project, so long as the Commonwealth chips in the rest.

The council had previously pinned its hopes on a $4 million contribution from the State Government but an email from the Sport and Recreation Office executive director Paul Anderson last month said funding could not be guaranteed by the application’s January 15 deadline.

As the East Torrens Messenger reported last November, the Leisure Centre redevelopment would include four full-sized basketball/futsal courts, aerobics, dance, cardio and weights rooms and a cafe.

There would be a focus on green technology, with solar panels, wind turbines and self-sufficient water systems.

State Swim and Squash SA are also keen to incorporate a 25m pool and squash courts into the final design.

The council says funding its portion of the $12m upgrade would have its debt peak at $20.4m in 2016, including borrowings for the $7m Campbelltown Library upgrade and $5m Newton Rd depot overhaul.

CEO Paul Di Iulio still hoped to secure some money from the State Government.

“Discussions are continuing between myself, the Department of Sport and Recreation and Member for Hartley Grace Portolesi to try to get some funding for the project,” he said.

“The centre is 40 years old and it needs an upgrade to meet the changing needs of our community.”

Mr Di Iulio said the council should know if its federal application is successful in the next few months.

Norwood Flames basketball president Peter Roberts hoped federal funding for the leisure centre upgrade would come through.

“If the upgrade doesn’t go ahead, we’ll continue to work with the council to support basketball at that facility, but we still won’t have a home,” he said.

“We get a bit disappointed when the State Government funds major facilities, like the $450 million for Adelaide Oval, and they can’t find the funds for regional projects.”

Futsal SA chairman Arthur Di Fede, whose organisation plays and trains at the centre, agreed: “To grow the sport for the benefit of the community we need this upgrade.”

FFSA Futsal Grand Final (Wednesday Night @ Magill)

A report and pictures of the FFSA Wednesday Night grand Final between The Wanderers and Once Were Playaz

Logo - Futsal South AustraliaRESULTS GRAND FINAL PLAYED 11/12/09

THE WANDERERS 3 def ONCE WERE PLAYAZ 0

An even and exciting 1st half with both teams pushing the envelope.

‘Piza’ was behaving himself until the 13 minute mark, when he had something to say to the refs.

Simo denied a golden opportunity with a brilliant reflex diving save with 1 minute remaining in the `1st half.

It was a tense and high energy 1st half with the scores locked at 0-0. What’s coming in the 2nd stanza?

A slightly subdued start to the 2nd half as both teams started to play a cautious game waiting for the right moment to strike. At the 3rd minute mark Borg drives a shot at goal from an acute wide angle only to smack against the near post, the only real chance of anyone scoring.

Eventually in the 4th minute Dual Golden Boot winner Osmon (Even with Stevens) manages to break the deadlock bursting through the tight Playaz defence. Up until then it was!

9 minutes in and there was an empty goal face with Simo being unusually caught out of position and an unmarked and un-named Playaz missed an absolute sitter!

With 4 minutes remaining and still only 1-0, was there anyone of the Playaz that could make himself into a star?

It certainly started to heat up as time was running out and the Playaz were pressing hard and often but with no reward. With 1.20 minutes remaining Jarrad puts the nail in the Playaz coffin handing the Wanderers the Wednesday Night Championship. Osmon scored with less than 30 seconds and it was time for celebrations as the Wanderers continued to dominate the local leagues with winning both the Tuesday and Wednesday Titles. Well Done! to the fellas! Can anyone beat them?

No doubting the passion both teams displayed tonight coupled with some sensational Futsal played.

A bouquet to both the Referees (John and David Greco) for a job well done! And cool head prevailed. As only 1 Yellow Card was handed out in the hot and frantic game.

Congratulations to the Wanderers!

Commiserations to Once Were Playaz, (always the Bridesmaid never the Bride!) That’s their 6th or 7th final.

To all teams and their families

Wishing you all a Safe and Happy Christmas and Fantastic New Year. Thank you for your patronage throughout the year. See you in 2010

$12m cost for Campbelltown Leisure Centre upgrade (SA)

Capacity upgrade from 8000 to 13000 visitors per month, with four futsal courts and a cafe

UPGRADE: Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer at the Campbelltown Leisure Centre, earmarked for a facelift.

UPGRADE: Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer at the Campbelltown Leisure Centre, earmarked for a facelift.

The Campbelltown Leisure Centre could get a $12 million facelift if the State and Federal governments agree to help the local council pay for it.

Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer says the centre, opened in 1968, is “completely inadequate and at capacity”.

“It is the only centre across most of the north-east that’s still in public hands,” he said.

“People are approaching us all the time to use the centre and we have to knock them back.

“We are losing the possibility of hosting higher standard and national competitions in sports like futsal (indoor soccer) and basketball because our courts aren’t big enough.”

Campbelltown Council is planning an upgrade to increase the centre’s capacity from 8000 to more than 13,000 visitors a month.

The council plans to contribute $2 million, and is hoping for $6 million of federal money and another $4 million from the State Government.

Plans for the upgrade include:

* four full-sized basketball courts or four futsal courts, some with spectator viewing;
* several meeting rooms and a function area;
* aerobics, dance, cardio and weights rooms; and
* a cafe.

Mr Brewer said the construction project would employ about 117 people, including jobs for the disabled through working with Bedford Industries.

“We’d obviously be seeking as much local input as possible, like we have done with the (Campbelltown) library.”

Mr Brewer said there was also an emphasis on green technology for the centre, with solar panels, wind turbines and self-sufficient water systems.

“We’ve got to set the standard and it doesn’t cost that much more to do those things.”

Futsal SA chairman Arthur Di Fede, whose organisation already plays and trains at the centre, said an upgrade would help the group to expand.

“At the moment all the courts are booked but if there were more, we could have more seniors teams, we could have national championships here,” he said.

Norwood Flames president Peter Roberts said the basketball club would help the council “where possible” to secure funding for the upgrade.

“It’s an important investment in recreation facilities for kids, including those playing basketball,” he said.

Mr Roberts said the upgrade could increase the club’s use of the centre, from a training venue to one where competitions and development programs were held.

South Australia Magill Round 12 Review

Match reviews from Round 12 of the Open Mens competition at Magill in South Australia

Logo - Futsal South AustraliaFUTSAL SA MAGILL WEDNESDAY 28th OCTOBER ROUND 12 REVIEW

The Wanderers 5 drew Once Were Playaz 5

Clash of the Titans! 2nd versus 3rd. That’s what this game was billed as. But by the 5th minute mark the Playaz were 2-0 up, No! 3-0 up (Can’t write quick enough!). Needless to say this game was about to turn into a furnace! The Playaz were sizzling at 4-0 up with 3 minutes remaining when Zaikis passes from a corner to Martinez with pin point accuracy who strikes it well and goals! The Wanderers were in disarray! Having said that the Playaz not content with leading 5 -0 had exceeded the 5 foul count and began their usual sissy fits at decisions made by the Refs. The 6th foul was committed and on the buzzer Borg stepped up and took the 10meter penalty to peg one back. 5-1 at half time. In the 1st half the Wanderers were outplayed but in the second the “Hot to Trot” Playaz IMPLODED, lost their cool and this allowed the ever repressible Wanderers to regain momentum and snatch a comeback draw. Confusion reigned supreme as tempers flared which saw keeper Vacca red carded after his second yellow card for dissent. A wasted opportunity by the Playaz! This game was RED HOT!

Keep on Walkin’ 9 drew Pool Cleaners 3

This game also had the makings of being a powder keg. As 1st played 4th. Breneki picks up the crumbs thanks to a clanger from Chris’s side kick-in deep in his defence and Breneki is 1on1 with the keeper and slots it in. The Cleaners were lacking concentration and penetration with a 3-1 shot at goal ratio, which funnily enough sees the Walkers lead 3-0 at half time as the Cleaners lacked finishing quality. Unusual tactics in the substitution changes from the Walkers with 2 players changing each time. Both sides had great scoring opportunities only to see the ball hit the post, or just missing and some great saves by the keepers Will and Marc. And like the previous game the Walkers went to sleep at the half and the Cleaners gained ascendancy in increasing their goal shooting prowess to see Stu score his brace which included slamming in the equalizer. Another enthralling and exciting game! But played in better spirits! A Hot Game!Pool Cleaners 3 def Grads Red 2

Dri ‘n’ Shine 2 def Grads Red 1

Unlike the 1st 2 games of the night this game never reached any sort of HOT climax! Dom sends a 30 meter lobbed pass over the defence to Rob M who is alone on the wing and hits it 1st time to score a brilliant team goal. All that brilliant passage of play went to naught as Greg equalizes right after the restart when he runs on to a loose ball just outside the D and lets one rip! DeConno in goals for the Shiners had his fair share of touches as he was needed to produce some excellent saves. 1-1 at the break. The Reds dominated attack and possession early in the 2nd half with 5 shots at goal, none counted! Both side squandered chances maybe due to the hot conditions or the full moon! And both played a controlled possession game waiting for the chances. Yes!!! At last! At the 14 minute mark of the 2nd half Paul controls the ball under pressure, does a step over and pivots to lose his marker and smacks the ball into the top corner for a superb goal! The game was that well played that the refs told me that there were only 2 fouls committed in the game! Well played lads!

SOAP 5 def Le Celeste 1

Le Celeste were pressing on more occasions and deserved to score but as usual the team defending the most score against the run of play. With Vincent scoring from an acute angle. Top Goal! And then the complex of the game changed completely as SOAP increased the tempo. Pat is awarded a penalty and takes the spot kick, but Mak is equal to the task. As I was writing a cannonball smacks my glasses off hits me in the nose and sends the papers flying and all I could see was stars! Looking through starry eyes all I could hear was, squeaking shoes, thunderous footsteps, shouts of ‘stay back!, give it! shoot!, agghhh! Expleteives @$^*& , the ref’s whistle and the sheer joy of Michael Iammarrone scoring his goal! For the record Vincent scored 3 as Long scored 2 and Michael 1

See you Next Week!

South Australia Magill Round 11 Review

Match reviews, Tables and Scorer lists from the latest round of the Open Mens competition at Magill in South Australia

Logo - Futsal South AustraliaFUTSAL SA MAGILL WEDNESDAY 21st OCTOBER ROUND 11 REVIEW

The Wanderers 5 def Dri ‘n’ Shine 2

This game certainly had the makings of being a brilliant game, however the Wanderers led 3-0 early in the 1st half with goals to Con Borg, Ross Osmon and Scott Koehne. Dom Pepicelli managed to peg one back and struck a great shot from a free kick quickly followed by a goal to Piotr Sapa and it was Game On! The 2nd half was a tight encounter with both sides unable to make any impact. At the 9 minute mark Ross Osmon squeezed a goal in at the near post to increase the Wanderers grasp on the game. The only downer of what was a top game was the red card to Joey Mercorella for a handball in the goal area. (Technically it was there!) A bit harsh considering it happened with seconds remaining in the game.

Game Highlights: Simon Ortlepp’s acrobatic save from a good lobbed attempt was pure brilliance! It got me out of my chair!! How he was overlooked for the Nationals is beyond me! 2 goals each to Con and Ross, that brings him 1 behind league leader Steven Smith.

Keep on Walkin’ 9 def Le Celeste 0

Another competitive game that saw heaps of great saves from both keepers Marc Piteo and Carlo Iammarone becoming prominent in the game. Carlo again performed well as week in week out continues to be asked to make heaps of saves due to his loose ‘Blues’ defence.

Game Highlights: Marc’s 1 handed reflex point blank save a gem! Dario turned his marker inside out and earns himself a free kick in a good position but can only spray it wide. 4 goals each to Karl Piteo and Matt Jones worth mentioning.

Pool Cleaners 3 def Grads Red 2

This match was there for the taking for either team to make an impression into the final series. It was the Cleaners that took the early ascendency with 3 quick goals, 1 to Russell Hunt and 2 to Charles Ndambuki. Paul Sloan scored a great goal with a blistering shot 15 meters out to bring the score to 3-1 at the break.

Game Highlights: Nick Pettas’s hail Mary shot 30 meters out just on the buzzer – audacious! Greg “Tuso” Nicolopoulos’s unstoppable run from defence and subsequent goal was truly impressive! Again both keepers had made incredible saves during this top game but the one that stick’s to my mind was the save by Will for the Cleaners with cat like reflexes, a delight!
