An accidental Aussie rep (TAS)
Matt Smith chosen for the U19 Vikings team to travel to America

Devonport's Matt Smith has made the Australian under 19 Futsal team which will travel to America at the end of the year. Picture: Katie McDougall.
Futsal is a sport on the rise, and Tasmania has embraced it with yet another Australian representative.
Devonport’s Matt Smith impressed selectors so much at the recent national titles in Sydney that he was selected in the under 19 Australian team to travel to America later this year.
“I’m absolutely stoked once I got the letter,” Smith said.
Being a state representative in the bigger form of the game – soccer – futsal was easy to get his teeth into.
Smith only took up futsal at the start of the 2008 season when he and a group of friends entered a tournament in Burnie.
“We used to play in the school gym with one of those big tennis balls and we decided one day to enter this tournament,” Smith said.
“At the tournament there was a scout there who picked our whole team as the state team and I have just gone on from there,” he said.
Smith recently quit playing the big version of the game to take up playing football for East Devonport.
“I’m moving to Hobart … to study, play futsal … but since I have made the Australian team I might have to take normal soccer back up again to get my skills up.”
For his achievements in making the Australian futsal team, Smith is this week’s The Advocate-IGA Sports Star of the Week.
Tasmania takes centre stage – Not once but four times!
A writeup on Tasmania’s fortunes at the Vikings Nationals
Recently Tasmania had 15 teams representing the state at the 2010 Vikings National Futsal Titles in Sydney.
Once again Tasmania improved on its previous tournament results by moving ahead in leaps and bounds on the pitch.
Tasmania won it’s first ever competition in 2008 when the 12 year old boys were crowned National School Champions and the state’s Futsal has gone through the roof since with improvement shown in all age group both male and female. The gap has closed and with the 12 Boys becoming runners up at last years Club Championships it was only a matter of time until the kids from the Island State created their own bit of history.
This tournament looked like it could be the breakthrough with the 13 Boys trying to go one better than last year along with several sides looking to establish themselves at National level including the 12 Boys who wanted the Schools and Clubs double.
In the end Tasmania came away with 2 winners and 2 runners up which was the best haul in the history of Tasmanian Futsal.
Winners -
12 Boys: After winning the National School championship under the guidance of Brazilian import Breno Bianchini the side set about going one better and winning the Club competition. With Brett Pullen in charge and led by captain Darcy Hall the side went through the tournament undefeated and outclassed every side they came across. Many of these players are involved in the Islanders Academy program and this showed out throughout the tournament.
13 Boys: The side which has been the bench mark in Tasmania for so long finally came away with the prize it longed for. With the passion burning from last years loss in the final minutes the side which had the breakthrough for Tasmania at the 2008 Schools comp did it again. They absolutely smashed every side in the lead up to the final and then looked as though they were going to choke before getting it together and running out victors!
Runners Up -
12 Girls: The most fearsome group of girls to ever travel away for Tasmania once again made it through to the final and once again were the runners up although they played a much higher standard team in NSW than they have ever faced before. A great allround performance by the team saw them cap off the tournament by narrowly going down 2-1 to a dubious penalty in the final.
10 Boys: The surprise packet of the tournament was the 10 Boys who played the game of their lives in the semi final to defeat what I regarded as the top side in the competition. In the final with their captain injured and the fuel tanks low they could not quiet dig deep enough to get over the line going down 4-3 in the end.
All Stars -
Playing who made all star selection were:
13 Boys- Cameron Rogers, Yosef Kolele
12 Boys- Vincent Kamano
11 Boys- Nicholas Fader
10 Boys- Baxter Norton
12 Girls- Phoebe Vaughan-Williams, Isobella Gee
14 Girls- Lauren Grant, Ondrea Duncan

Northwest Dynamite crowned Super League Champions (TAS)
4-3 win over Derwent Storm sees them crowned champions
The explosive power of North West Dynamite saw the outfit from the North West Coast become the State Champions for the first time. In the Super League’s second year it was North West Dynamite who completed their fairytale of finishing top of the pile by winning an exciting final against Derwent Storm 4-3 after surging home at the end to snatch the victory.
Derwent Storm led through out the game but a very patient, structured and talented Dynamite team showed why they have been the team to beat and finally cracked through the determined and disciplined Storm defense.
Two goals from league MVP Sean Howe and one each from Isaac Turner and Captain Matt Smith saw the visitors home while Matt Chapman, Corey Smith and Aaron Marney replied for the home side.
“The boys really worked hard and we would like to thank Futsal Tasmania for putting this event together, we hope to see you all next year” said Matt Smith, who was visibly ecstatic as were the rest of the Dynamite squad after the game.
It was fantastic to see a young talented side do so well and it shows that the new wave of Futsal player is breaking through.
“Congratulations to North West Dynamite who for me were the best side in the competition throughout and also the most committed, with 4 trips to the South and one also to Launceston through out the competition. It has been a fantastic achievement for your guys and although I am a touch disappointed that we have come 2nd again…. I am happy that a young team has won the competition for the sake of Futsal in Tasmania and where we are heading” said Storm Captain and Futsal representative Corey Smith.
It is the 2nd consecutive year that the Storm have been runners up in the final of Tasmania’s premier competition.
The 2009 Tassal Super League has come to a close and we look forward to North West Dynamite defending their title next season.
In the Qualifying final 3rd placed Derwent Storm played one of their best games to win 11-10 over a Ricky Self inspired Zebras F.C outfit in what was one of the games of the season.
