IFA plans to organize Futsal and Beach Soccer Leagues (Solomon Islands)

IFA aiming to grow Futsal and Beach Soccer in the Isabel Province

The Isabel Football Association (IFA) is planning to establish Futsal and Beach Soccer Leagues in the province this year.

This was revealed by IFA President, Stanley Siapu, in an interview with the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Media Office yesterday.

Siapu explained that the aim of the IFA is to grow both Futsal and Beach Soccer in Isabel Province.

“The aim of our plan is to lay the groundwork for the development of both codes and also to bring to the surface talent that we know exists in the local communities in Isabel.

“The plan by the national body to organize national competitions for the 2 codes is our cue to kick start,” Siapu said.

Initially, the Futsal and Beach soccer leagues will be held in the Buala region.

This is due to the cost of bringing teams from outside Buala to participate.

However, IFA aims to expand this as more funds are available and when the player base is large enough. IFA is expecting up to 8 teams to register for each code when their respective leagues start.

Two suitable venues have already been identified for the Futsal league. The first is a grass-court in Jejevo and the other is a hard sand court in Buala village.

According to Siapu, both venues have previously been used for Futsal games by villagers and students in the area.

IFA is still looking for a possible site for their Beach Soccer pitch. Siapu said that there are many potential sites in the area but IFA has to look for one that is the best in terms of sand quality, space and ease of access.

Potential for Small Sides Games in Isabel

IFA is confident that the potential for Futsal and Beach soccer development in Isabel is high. This is mostly due to the topography of the island which makes both codes an attractive alternative to 11-a-a-side football.

“Large flat areas are scarce in Isabel and the 11-a-side code requires a lot of land for just one pitch unlike Futsal and Beach soccer,” Siapu said.

He added the other factor, especially true for Beach Soccer, is that players do not require boots, socks and sin pads so it’s affordable for rural people.

At this stage IFA will need a lot of support for it to foster the development of the 2 codes in Isabel. The development of a permanent and housed Futsal court is seen as the vital piece in the puzzle for IFA.

“I believe that the development of a proper Futsal court will propel the growth of the game here in Isabel,” Siapu said.

Interest in Futsal and beach Soccer is growing in the rural communities in Solomon Islands especially with the success of the National Teams in regional and international championships.

The first ever national championships for the Futsal and Beach Soccer will be held this year.

Forty Register for Futsal Refereeing Course (Solomon Islands)

Excellent level of interest in reffing Futsal in the Solomon Islands

Forty people have registered for the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Basic Futsal Refereeing Course which starts yesterday afternoon at the SIFF Academy complex in Honiara.

This signals a very good start for Futsal refereeing in Solomon Islands with this course marking the first SIFF organized training for referees for the indoor code.

The SIFF Small Sided Games and Referee Development office said that they did not expect the number to be this high.

The target number was 25 but the amount of interest was so great that the registration was relaxed to cater for additional participants.

‘The interest expressed in the course is beyond our expectations,’ Victor Waiia, the SIFF Small Sided Games Development Officer, said.

‘Consequently, we have to make adjustments to cater for the extra people.’

The original intention was to hold the course sessions from 4:30pm to 6:30pm in the afternoons but with this number, the participants will have to be split into 2 groups.

The first day will be an introductory session so all 40 participants can be accommodated.

From the second day, however, there will be 2 sessions; one in the morning (9:00am to 11:00am) and the other in the afternoon (4:30pm to 6:30pm).

The afternoon session will mainly be for participants who will be unavailable for the morning sessions due to work commitments.

All other participants will be registered for the morning course.

Course instructors, Victor Waiia and Justin Mutukera, are confident that this adjustment will ensure that the quality of content that is delivered to the participants will be of a high standard.

‘It is not good to have too many people in one class so this division of the participants into 2 groups will help us to administer the course effectively,’ Mutukera said.

In the opening day the course cover Futsal Laws of the Game Law 1, Law 2, Law 3 and Law 4.

The second day will cover Laws 5 – 9 and the third day examines Laws 10 – 14.

The fourth and final day covers Laws 15 – 17 and also extends to important topics like procedures to determine the winner, referee signals and guidelines for Futsal referees.

A theory examination will be held on Friday 19th to assess the participants.

The training is aimed at preparing referees for Futsal tournaments in Honiara and the provinces as well as for national championships.

The Honiara Men’s Futsal League was affected by the lack of referees.

Participants are encouraged to make use of the course to prepare for a career as a Futsal referee.

Mutukera said that with the upcoming Futsal championship in March we have to have properly trained Futsal referees.

It is also hoped that the Basic Futsal Refereeing course will pave the way for international level Futsal refereeing courses to be held in Solomon Islands.

The Sherry Challenge Wrap (NSW)

A nice writeup on the recently held Sherry Challenge day at Dural

Last Sunday saw the Sherry Challenge take place to help raise money for the Sherry Family. Tragically, both Joseph and wife Carole drowned during a family holiday in Ballina.

The Futsal Community was out in force to help raise some money and watch some quality Futsal with four games played throughout the day.

The day started with an Academy game between Sydney City Eagles and Mascot Vipers. With plenty of talent on display for both sides this game was action packed which kept the fans entertained. Sydney City won the match 3-0 with goals to John Moribito, Dimitrios Petratos and Xane Zaineddine.

Our second match was an under 12 boys game with Sydney City Eagles taking on Campbelltown City Quake. Sydney City started well and hit the post no fewer 4 times in an entertaining first half. In the second half Quake upped their enthusiasm and came back in to the contest which saw them take the lead thanks to Brandon Clissold with a cracking right foot effort. Sydney City could not find a reply and Quake ran out winners 1-0 thanks to Clissold strike.

The game which saw the NSW Futsal Referees verse the NSW Premier/Super League coaches. This light hearted game was very entertaining with both sides being kept in toe by Robert Foti, Marcelo Bortone (both players). The coaches dominated the game and played some quality Futsal at times, with Erkin Osman, Shiska Filopovic turning back the clock and proving they still can play with some style. The coaches run out victors 7-2. Goals scorers Ernie Bivona, Matteo Maiorana, Mark Symington, Erkin Osman x2 (Coaches), Andrew Best and Cameron Bruce (Referees)

The Main event saw the Australian Futsalroos take on NSW Thunder. This was the last game for the Futsalroos before they depart for the AFC Futsal Championship ASEAN Zone qualifiers. NSW Thunder is also preparing for the AFC Futsal Club Championships held in Iran.

NSW Thunder started the better of the two sides and took a deserved lead when Dylan Maloney slotted the ball past Angelo Konstantinou in the Futsalroos goal. The Aussies seemed to settle and come back into the contest. NSW thunder were unlucky not to eaxtend there lead when Elliot Ragomo’s effort just went wide with Konstantinou stranded. The Futsalroos newest member Tom Rogic then turned on the style with two well taken goals to give the Futsalroos the advantage at the half time break.

The second half was a mixed affair with the Futsalroos coming out of the sheds full of running taking and scoring two first to Pat Ross-McGee and the second sealed a hat-trick for Rogic. NSW Thunder had it all to do as they tried to claw their way back into the contest. With 8 minutes to go the game was turned on its head when NSW thunder started their fight back Robbie Issa found himself free inside the “D” his shot beat Josh Codrington in the Futsalroo goal. Then it was Elliot Ragomo turn to bring a goal back with a well worked move with Daniel Fulton. Fulton’s ball found Ragomo in space and his shot fly into the back of the net. Danny Martinez then drew the sides level when some fine passing in mid court found Martinez in space and he finished nicely. NSW Thunder had the crowd on their side as they pushed for the winner, however a lapse in concentration two minutes from time cost NSW Thunder dearly as John Barrientos was allowed to run through the middle of the court and Fernando De Moraes through ball found Barrientos whos effort was to good for Roberto Maiorana in the Thunder goal.

Eagles soar into the final with 3-0 win over Allstars (NSW)

The NSW Premier League Open Womens Grand Final teams are now decided

Two goals from Melissa Link in each half and a Renee Tomkins penalty were enough for Sydney City to triumph over old rivals the Inner West Allstars 3-0 to set up what should be a terrific final against Campbelltown next weekend.

The Eagles looked on their game from the outset as Melissa Link played in Amanda Perfilio but her shot went just wide.

Natasha LoGuidice turned and hit a low shot that Tani Rosekelly did well to block.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a fine solo goal when Melissa Link dispossessed a player ran down court and powered a low shot past the keeper to give her side a valuable 1-0 lead.

Amanda Perfilio teed up Renee Tomkins and her shot produced a great save from Amanda Horafios in goal to prevent the Eagles going further ahead.

Tani Rosekelly produced a great block to deny Natsha LoGuidice, Renee Tomkins had another shot saved by Horafios and Nicole Laws headed just over for the Eagles.

The Allstars pressured the Eagles in ernest late in the first half but could not find a way through and the Eagles went to the break with a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half the Eagles lay siege to the Allstars goal and Rose Scarlato thrust out a hand to prevent the ball going in and was subsequently red carded.

Renee Tompkins stepped up and took the penalty dispatching it with ease to give the Eagles a two goal cushion.

The Allstars put Natalie Spirovski upfront with Natasha LoGuidice to try and claw back a goal but the Eagles defence were determined to get back in numbers whenever possession was lost so the Allstars real threats on goal were few and far between.

Renee Tomkins takes on Clare Tyson. Photo by Peter Davies

The Allstars piled on the pressure and Spirovski teed up a nice backheel for Helen Petinos but her shot went over.

LoGuidice fought hard upfront for every ball and hit a shot just over.

Brooke Cowie found space on the counter but shot across the goal, Melissa Link laid on a nice backheel for Perfilio to shoot wide and a Tomkins shot produced a great save from Horafios.

With 6 minutes left to go Melissa Link grabbed her second and virtually sealed the game for the Eagles when she caught everyone by surprise by firing in a shot from the corner when everyone was setting themselves for a cross. The ball was inch perfect and snuck inside the near post to give the Eagles an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The Eagles could have gone further ahead but for Horafios making three point blank saves to deny the Eagles.

Lauren Vasota was unlucky to se her shot hit the post in the dying minutes but the game.

The Sydney City Eagles fought with great determination to shut down the threats from the Allstars and deservedly go through to next weeks grand final in what should be a compelling contest.

Ragomo hat-trick helps Dural into the Youth Final (NSW)

Dural 8-3 over Benfica to advance to the Premier League Grand Final

A marvellous hat-trick from Elliot Ragomo helped propel the Dural Warriors into next weeks Grand Final by ruthlessly brushing aside an out of sorts Benfica 8-3 to set up a showdown with the Allstars on their home court at Dural.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Zac Caruana was given time and space to hit a scorching long range shot into the corner of the net.

One minute later Dural scored again when Caruana received the ball down the right side and slammed the ball low past the keeper to give his side a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later Dural scored again when Elliot Ragomo opened his account when he received the ball down the right side and hit an inch perfect shot inside the near post to make it 3-0.

The Benfica sides approach was completely off and they were playing on anger. Distinctly unhappy with proceedings they were in danger of imploding altogether but the coach fortunately called a time out to talk and gather themselves.

From the restart they set about finding their old game and came close when Vic Koutsoufis sped through the middle of the court and hit a fierce drive that Dural keeper Alastair Bruce did well to hold.

Benfica clawed their way back into the match when Vic Koutsoufis broke through and skilfully rounded the keeper to make the score 3-1.

Benfica spirits rose and they almost grabbed a second when Ali Bazzi attempted to lift the ball over the keeper but Alastair Bruce just managed to fingertip the ball away.

Elliott Ragomo was finding space to run at the defence and hit a shot inches wide. Moments later he did the same thing and weaved his way through the middle of the court then rounded the keeper to score a terrific solo goal with 3 minutes to go.

In the last minute of the first half Benfica hearts sank when they Nathan Niski played a nice one-two with Rhys Giovenali, out-positioned keeper and slid the ball into an empty net to make it 5-1.

Dural compounded Benfica’s woes in the first minute of the second half when Elliot Ragomo had yet more space in front of him to go on another weaving run through the centre of the court and smash his shot into the net for a fine goal.

Mark Pinto was unlucky to see his shot strike the post after a determined run.

Josh Codrington took advantage of a mix up in the Benfica defence to drill home Durals seventh goal.

Anthony Poniris pulled a goal back when he ran forward and rounded the keeper to slot the ball home for nice solo goal to make it 7-2.

Ryan Johnstone and Nathan Niski interchanged passes nicely down the court for Johnstone to slide the ball home to make the score 8-2.

Benfica grabbed a late consolation goal when Anthony Poniris stepped inside and slammed a fierce drive into the net to round off the scoring at 8-3.

This very talented young Benfica side were missing keeper Wayne Estevao and coach Joe Pinto after both were dubiously red carded last week. But they allowed this set back to get the better of them and came into this game with perhaps the wrong approach mentally and Dural were on hand to ruthlessly capitalise.

Quake reel in the Vipers with come from behind 3-1 win (NSW)

Quake through to the U16 Boys Premier League Grand Final

The Campbelltown Quake booked a Grand Final date with the Allstars next weekend by eventually overhauling the Vipers late in the second half to win 3-1 in a full blooded competitive contest at Menai.

The opening half was a close tussle with both sides going close to opening the scoring. The Vipers Tom Collins had a shot saved by Quake keeper Andrew Haim, Nathan Clissold hit a freekick just wide, Andrew Haim came out bravely to thwart Jakov Radas and the Quakes Nicolas Colantonio had a run and shot turned away by Vipers keeper Luis Soto

Quake Celebrate. Photo by Peter Davies

The Vipers were looking the stronger in the early stages and at times were pinning back the Quake deep in defence.

After 6 minutes the Vipers scored when Tom Collins fed the ball to the left where Jakov Radas surprised the defence a little by stepping towards a pass and smashing it first time into the top corner for an excellent goal.

Mascot almost scored again when Jakov Radas teed up Johnathon Kontalis whose shot was turned away for a corner.

But the Quake were full of fight and began to have more efforts on the Vipers goal as the half wore on with Daniel Velloneo heavily involved in many of the shots on goal.

The first half ended with the Vipers keeping a grip on their lead with Mascot in front 1-0.

The Vipers started the second half at full throttle with Dimitri Daaboul hitting a fierce shot from the right that forced an excellent save from Andrew Haim who then blocked Dillon Vorsters follow up

The Vipers almost extended their lead when Tom Collins smashed a drive that Haim did well to turn away for a corner. From the resulting corner he produced another fine save to deny Dillon Vorsters shot and shortly after Tom Collins hit a freekick just inches wide.

With 10mins to go Daniel Velloneo turned and hit his shot across the keeper but the ball agonisingly struck a post and bounced away. Then Vipers keeper Luis Soto produced a great save to deny Nathan Clissold

With eight minutes to go the Vipers were beginning to tire and the Quake were getting closer and closer to scoring.

The Quake levelled when Daniel Velloneo sped down the left and cut the ball inside for Jake McGing to bundle it over the line to make it 1-1.

Minutes later the Quake took the lead when Daniel Velloneo who’d been a constant threat the whole game received the ball from a corner and smashed it first time into the net to make it 2-1 to the delight of the Quake contingent.

With three minutes left on the clock the Quake sealed the win when Nicolas Colantonio got on the end of a fine quick passing move to slide the ball home to make it 3-1.

This Quake side are defending champs from the 14 Boys last season and they will be looking make it the 16 boys champs next weekend also. Should be a great encounter against the Allstars.

Nicholas Pepper hits four as Raiders 14 boys make the Grand Final (NSW)

Raiders win 5-3 over Eagles to make the Grand Final

Nicholas Pepper scored four goals to help the Western Raiders overcome Sydney City Eagles 5-3 in an exciting clash where all eight goals came in a furious second half.

The first half was a very even and competitive half with both sides having an equal share of chances on goal.

Christopher Naumoff for the Eagles hit a long shot that was well turned away by Raiders keeper Tony Anic, Nicholas Pepper juggled the ball then hit a volley that keeper Dominic Breckenridge saved then later Pepper went down the left side and hit a shot across the keeper that struck the post and rebounded away to safety.

Nicholas Pepper did a sweet backflick to tee up Jake Adelson but his shot went over.

The Eagles chose to play Peter Makrillos off the bench but he came on too good effect and his shot flashed just wide after receiving a nice pass from Blair Brown.

Tony Lo tries to win the ball. Photo by Peter Davies.

Raiders forward Tony Lo was also dangerous when he came off the bench and Eagles keeper Dominic Breckenridge twice made fine blocks to deny him a goal.

The game was moving from end to end but both sets of defences were reading the play well and cutting out the final ball or doing enough to prevent real threatening situations on goal so the sides went to the break at 0-0.

The second half was the reverse of the first with the attack dominating the defence and in the opening 3 minutes the Raiders grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with three quick goals in succession that had the Eagles reeling.

Nicholas Pepper broke down the left side and slammed a long range shot across the keeper into the net in the first minute.

From the kick off the Eagles almost levelled when Peter Makrillos forced an excellent save from Tony Anic.

The Raiders immediately turned defence into attack as the ball was moved swiftly down court where Jake Adelson latched on to it and drilled the ball home from right side to make it 2-0.

Before anyone could settle the ball was in the back of the net again as Nicholas Pepper swept the ball home to make it 3-0.

In the space of 3 minutes the Raiders had virtually booked their place in the grand final with three unanswered goals.

The fighting Eagles were not done with and stormed back with two goals. The first when Bruno Andelmi hit a fierce long range shot that whistled into the net.

The second when Blair Brown sped down the right passed inside to Bruno Andelmi who teed up Peter Makrillos to sweep the ball home for an excellent goal to make it 2-3.

Nic Pepper Flying High after his third goal. Photo by Peter Davies

Sensing a real chance of a win the Eagles stepped up the pressure and the game intensified even more, but with the Eagles committing players forward the Raiders found space to run into and capitalised with devastating effect with two quick goals.

The Raiders fourth goal came when Tony Anic threw a long ball down court to Nicholas Pepper who turned onto his left foot and slammed the ball across the keeper into the net to grab his hat-trick.

Then shortly after Tony Lo evaded the defence and slipped the ball inside to Pepper who made no mistake from close range to make it 5-2

The Eagles never gave up fighting and forced Raiders keeper Tony Anic into several saves before Christopher Naumoff hit an unstoppable shot into the net from long range to round off the scoring.

In the dying moments 12’s player Adrian Epifanino almost made it six for the Raiders but for a fine save from the Eagles keeper.

In the end three lightening quick goals from the Raiders at the start of the second half was too big a setback for the Eagles to climb and so the Western Raiders 14 Boys rightfully earned the chance to playoff for the Grand Final next weekend.

Albany Creek were victorious in the Championship League in 2009 and have been promoted to compete this year in the Premier League. North Lakes State College is brand new to this tournament and will be playing in the Championship League for 2010. Tullawong State High School was relegated to the Championship League due to their results last year.

Round 1 for the Premier League is to be held this Friday at Robina State High School. The first Championship League round is also being held on Friday at Deception Bay State High School. All visitors and supporters are welcome to attend.

There are tough teams in both leagues this year, best of luck to all the teams competing!
