FIFA futsal ref course opens at soccer headquarters in Pago (Samoa)

6 day Futsal Referee course taking place in Samoa

More than 20 soccer officials are participating in the six-day 30-hour FIFA Futsal Referee Course that imparts the 17 laws of the game of futsal, a variation of soccer played indoors on a smaller field, with five a side.

FIFA Referee Instructor Neil Poloso, from the Solomon Islands, arrived Friday and opened the course along with officials from the Football Federation of American Samoa (FFAS) at the FFAS Headquarters in Pago Pago.

The course opened with a word of prayer and welcome remarks from FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua and FFAS Vice President Sandra Herrera.

This is the first time the futsal course is being offered in the territory, said Taumua during the opening.

Herrera welcomed Poloso and local officials on behalf of FFAS President Iuli Alex Godinet, thanking Federation staff for their assistance.

Herrera said the course is important in order to provide fair officiating of futsal as a futsal tournament is being organized.

The course, materials and ADIDAS equipment for referees are funded by the FIFA Referee Assistance Program (RAP).

During a Samoa News interview, Poloso said that an integral part of the course is teaching and training referees on the 17 Laws of Futsal.

“For me, it is an opportunity to come to this country and assist in developing futsal…officials must understand the game,” Poloso said. “It is a privilege to assist the FFAS in their cause of developing futsal.”

The course consists of classroom training and actual management of a futsal match with participants required to take quizzes on the 17 Laws and complete a fitness evaluation “to see if they are fit to ref the game or not,” said Poloso.

The class will also show officials how to position themselves on the field during games, recognizing fouls, how to use their whistles and other techniques in officiating futsal.

“Most stuff will be very new to the referees…after the course, officials will be ready to officiate futsal organized by the FFAS,” Poloso pointed out.

Poloso mentioned that the FFAS is putting together a team to represent American Samoa at the OFC Futsal Championships that will be held in Fiji August this year.

Officials he said will be key in helping develop the sport in the territory and encourages them to learn all they can.

“It’s very important they work with us on this because its all about the laws of the game…they must learn as much as they can and they must go out and practice and participate in regular training,” Poloso explained. “They must go and practice.”

Poloso spent three years as a referee in his home country of Solomon Islands and has been with FIFA three years. This is his third visit to the island. He instructs referee courses for 11 a side soccer, futsal and beach soccer all around the Pacific.

He noted that there is a local futsal instructor who completed training in Fiji July 2-7, 2009 and is qualified to run local training — Avele Lalogafu’afu’a M.

“It’s important that local referees understand the laws of the game…futsal is a new sport that we are trying to develop,” he told Samoa News. “ It’s a little bit different from 11 a side…the game is very fast…I hope the refs put in the time to learn the laws…hopefully this course will help local refs to gain more knowledge before the league starts.”

Lalogafu’afu’a points out that they are still looking for more people to help by volunteering to officiate futsal.

“We’re still looking for more people to volunteer and help the youth,” he said.

The course will close Thursday. Participants who complete the 30-hour training will receive FIFA participation certificates that will allow them to officiate local futsal games organized by the FFAS.

Poloso will leave the island Friday this week and head to Samoa to host the same course Feb. 13-19. He then visits Tonga to conduct an 11 a side referee course. After Tonga, Poloso heads home.

Breakers in the NSW Super League Finals

Press Release from Breakers FC regarding the strength of their female teams

“Breakers FC’s reputation as a powerhouse in women’s Futsal was proven once again when, for the second successive year, all their girls teams charged into the FNSW Superleague grandfinal to be played at Dural this Saturday.

Last year the girls achieved an amazing victory when they won all 3 grand finals (u13, U16, and open) and the pressure was on to repeat this performance in the 2009/10 season.

Despite FNSW introducing another age group in the girls competition (u12’s), Breakers showed the depth of their talent by qualifying all four of their girls teams for Saturdays Grand Final.

Leading the way for the club all year has been the undefeated U16’s who finished minor premiers with an incredible 149 goals to their name and a goal difference of 142 for the season. ( U/16’s squad – Ellen Wheatley, Sarah Roger, Bella Walker, Beth Sweeny, Ariella Cabezas, Nic Drakopoulos, Sana Cook and Tess Olsen).

Equally as dominant in their age group were the u/14’s who were also undefeated, finished first and scoring 107 goals in the season. (U/14’s Sana Cook, Tess Olsen, Maddie Bart, Harley Johnston, Fede Frew, Sharna Barras, Isabella Rudolph, Georgia Thomson and Genevieve Ingham).

The babies of the Breakers outfit – the newly formed U/12’s team- ended up equal first on points, but second on goal difference. Showing tremendous courage and determination throughout the finals series, they survived two intense encounters to take their place in the final with an extra-time win over Enfield. (U/12’s – Chloe O’Brien, Hannah Dyball, Hannah Williams, Courtney Wood, Nic Simonsen, Sammy Grant, Alexia Guerinoni, Nicole Stuart and Lucy Coleman).

All that was left to complete a sensational season for the Breakers was the Open women’s heart-stopping 1-0 victory over Boomerangs FC last Saturday night, paving the way for the team’s third successive grand final appearance.

The success of the open’s side is a credit to the spirit and determination that prevails in the club, with players as young as 13 often stepping up into the Open side when the team was depleted by injuries and work commitments. (Open squad – Emily Doyle, Di Murace, Patty Murace, Imogen Carlisle, Alex Kent, Ellen Wheatley, Sarah Roger, Bella Walker, and Beth Sweeny).

Good luck to all the teams this Saturday.

GO BREAKERS!!!!!

Futsal Premier League Grand Final Preview (NSW)

A writeup from Football NSW on the upcoming Grand Finals

Fourteen Premiership rounds have past, as have 2 weeks of intense Semi Final Futsal to leave us only days away from crowning the Champions of the 2009/10 Futsal Premier League season.

12 Boys – (1st) Commodores FCB vs. (3rd) Inner West Allstars

Premiers and overwhelming favourites the Hawkesbury Commodores such with their feet up watching as Sydney Benfica and the Inner West Allstars battled out an absolute classic for the right to compete come Saturday afternoon. Benfica started brilliantly and twice took 4 goal leads but the quality and determination drove the Allstars to an unbelievable come from behind 9-7 victory.

The Commodores are the overwhelming and deserved favourites having racked up over a 130 goals this season but the Allstars have already upset the Commodores this season, Could another one be on the cards?

Ritchie Darko has been the standout player in the competition but Alisane Fofanah isn’t too far behind him and the winner of this individual dual could determine the outcome.

Ritchie Darko will be looking to bag a few goals and lead his team to victory in the 12 Boys Final

12 Girls – (1st) Campbelltown Quake vs. (2nd) Western Raiders

Premiers Campelltown Quake watched the Preliminary semi final and wouldn’t have been able to know who they were playing such was the topsy turvy clash between their Grandfinal opponents the Raiders and the Dural Warriors. The Warriors were close to earning an upset and book their place in the Final but and in extra time the Raiders fought just that little bit harder to score the decisive goal and clinch their Final appearance with a 3-2 victory.

Both the games during the regular season have been won by the Campelltown based side but the Raiders are a team you just can’t write off. The top 2 teams should put on a great show.

14 Boys – (1st) Inner West Allstars vs. (2nd) Western Raiders

The last time these 2 teams met the Allstars won in 4-0 victory in the Major semi final but that score line wasn’t a true indication of the closeness between these two teams. The Raiders led by star Hagi Gligor accounted for a very good Sydney City side in the Preliminary Semi 4 goals to 3 to book their deserved position this weekend.

The Allstars led by Dylan Caton must go into the final feeling fairly confident having beaten the Raiders in their 3 previous encounters this season.

14 Girls – (1st) Inner West Allstars vs. (3rd) Sydney City Eagles

Sydney City Eagles have been the surprise packet in this finals race, having finished 3rd on the table, the Eagles have beaten both more fancied opponents on their way to make a Grandfinal appearance which not many people thought possible. Most pundits expected the Allstars and the Vipers to battle it out, but led by star Melissa Caceras the Eagles over powered the Vipers to score the day’s biggest upset in a 7-5 victory. The Eagles will be hoping they can leave the biggest upset until Grand final day when they take on competition heavyweights the Inner West Allstars. The Allstars went 14 games undefeated to leave the competition in their wake but needed penalty a shoot out to book their Grand Final place. With the confidence and the form the young Eagles are in this one should be a great game.

16 Boys – (1st) Inner West Allstars vs. (2nd) Campelltown Quake

And so these grand old rivals meet again. Quake had to fight and fight they did against the Mascot Vipers in their qualifying semi final. The Quake boys were a goal down until they fought hard to score 3 unanswered goals and seal their grand final place with a 3-1 victory.

The last time these 2 sides met was the Major semi where Quake led by 2 goals to nil until the Allstars fought back and took the game and the week off after their 3-2 victory. Both these teams know each other inside out. There is some great talent in both squads which should make for one of the more entertaining games of the day. Goal keepers Marcello Bortone and Andrew Haim have been in great form so far this final series and both will play a massive role in helping their team to victory.

16 Girls -(1st) Inner West Allstars vs. (2nd) Mascot Vipers.

In what should be a great game, the Allstars have the slight edge over a Doris Osman led Vipers side. Having played 3 times this season the Allstars lead 2-1 and with a convincing 4-2 semi final victory two weeks ago, the Allstars will go into the final confident. The Vipers coached but astute tactician Erkin Osman will go in to final battle hardened after coming from behind and beating a good Benfica side 3-2. Coach Joe Baldacci will rely heavily upon young star Helen Petinos to lead his side to victory after some storming performances so far this season. The Vipers are a very good side having already beaten the Allstars once this season could do it again. This one is too close to call.

Doris Osman will be hoping her Mascot team mates can stop Allstars on Saturday in the 16 Girls Final

Youth Men’s – (1st) Inner West Allstars vs. (4th) Dural Warriors

Dural Warriors finished the season in 4th position that certainly doesn’t show how good this team is.

In a clash which many people wanted to see in young stars Daniel Fogarty and Elliot Ragomo go head to head, unfortunately won’t eventuate with Fogarty’s recent call up to the National team. Ragomo is without doubt the best player in the competition and in the past 2 games has seen the star score 6 goals with a hat trick in each of his two semi final appearances.

Both teams will be lacking star players because of Injury, suspension and representative call ups with the Allstars most hit with Shervin Adeli, Shayne Ardle and now without Fogarty will see them field a team which resembles nothing like the team that earned them top position. While the Warriors are without probably the most influential player in the competition, Rhys Giovenali after his National team call up.

The Warriors are without doubt now the favourites and after easily accounting for Sydney Benfica in their semi final 8-3, the Warriors should seal another victory in an age group which they are always difficult to beat.

Zac Caruana (left) has been in fine form for Dural recently and he will hoping to Inspire his side in the Youth Men Final

Open Women’s -(1st) Campbelltown Quake vs (2nd) Sydney City Eagles

The young brash Quake girls vs. the older and experienced Eagles. Sydney City played one of their best games of the season without Amanda Bowering on the weekend to dispatch the Inner West Allstars 3-0 in which Melissa Link scored a double to book their place in the final whilst the return of Nichole Laws should make a difference for the Eagles against Quake.

Quake on the other hand is a young side coached by Tom Thompson that came into the competition with nothing to lose and have been the best team all season. Led by Stephanie Haim and Leesa Thompson the Quake girls are hoping to repeat their semi final form and account for the Eagles to seal a deserved Premiership and Championship double.

For the first time in the Competitions history all 9 Minor Premiers have made their way to the Grand Finals and in 6 Grand Finals 1st vs. 2nd will go head to head.

In what should be a great day of Futsal the Dural Sports and Leisure Centre is the venue to watch all the exciting action.

Kick off Times:

12pm – Grade 12 Boys – Commodores FCB v Inner West Allstars
1pm – Grade 12 Girls – Campbelltown Quake v Western Raiders
2pm – Grade 14 Boys – Inner West Allstars v Western Raiders

4pm – Grade 16 Boys – Inner West Allstars v Campbelltown Quake
5pm – Grade 16 Girls – Inner West Allstars v Mascot Vipers

IFA plans to organize Futsal and Beach Soccer Leagues (Solomon Islands)

IFA aiming to grow Futsal and Beach Soccer in the Isabel Province

The Isabel Football Association (IFA) is planning to establish Futsal and Beach Soccer Leagues in the province this year.

This was revealed by IFA President, Stanley Siapu, in an interview with the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Media Office yesterday.

Siapu explained that the aim of the IFA is to grow both Futsal and Beach Soccer in Isabel Province.

“The aim of our plan is to lay the groundwork for the development of both codes and also to bring to the surface talent that we know exists in the local communities in Isabel.

“The plan by the national body to organize national competitions for the 2 codes is our cue to kick start,” Siapu said.

Initially, the Futsal and Beach soccer leagues will be held in the Buala region.

This is due to the cost of bringing teams from outside Buala to participate.

However, IFA aims to expand this as more funds are available and when the player base is large enough. IFA is expecting up to 8 teams to register for each code when their respective leagues start.

Two suitable venues have already been identified for the Futsal league. The first is a grass-court in Jejevo and the other is a hard sand court in Buala village.

According to Siapu, both venues have previously been used for Futsal games by villagers and students in the area.

IFA is still looking for a possible site for their Beach Soccer pitch. Siapu said that there are many potential sites in the area but IFA has to look for one that is the best in terms of sand quality, space and ease of access.

Potential for Small Sides Games in Isabel

IFA is confident that the potential for Futsal and Beach soccer development in Isabel is high. This is mostly due to the topography of the island which makes both codes an attractive alternative to 11-a-a-side football.

“Large flat areas are scarce in Isabel and the 11-a-side code requires a lot of land for just one pitch unlike Futsal and Beach soccer,” Siapu said.

He added the other factor, especially true for Beach Soccer, is that players do not require boots, socks and sin pads so it’s affordable for rural people.

At this stage IFA will need a lot of support for it to foster the development of the 2 codes in Isabel. The development of a permanent and housed Futsal court is seen as the vital piece in the puzzle for IFA.

“I believe that the development of a proper Futsal court will propel the growth of the game here in Isabel,” Siapu said.

Interest in Futsal and beach Soccer is growing in the rural communities in Solomon Islands especially with the success of the National Teams in regional and international championships.

The first ever national championships for the Futsal and Beach Soccer will be held this year.
