SIFF assessed project sites (Solomon Islands)
More Futsal courts to be developed in the Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) General Secretary, Eddie Ngava, has conducted two tours to visit SIFF project sites in the Western and Malaita Province earlier this month.
Accompanying Ngava was architect, Francis Loboi, who is contracted to draw up the plans for the infrastructure developments at the two proposed sites.
Also in the team was Phillip Ohoto’ona who is the SIFF Special Projects Manager looking after the LEARN&play Project.
According to Ngava, the purpose of the visit was three-fold.
“The primary reason was to assess development sites which are in these two provinces and draw up specific architectural designs to be attached with final project documents for submission to the relevant funding bodies,” Ngava said.
The John F. Kennedy stadium in Gizo is earmarked for redevelopment into a regional training centre for football. The development is funded under FIFA Goal III Project.
The FIFA Goal III Project is also funding the redevelopment of the Aligegeo stadium which is about to be completed.
Further work on the Aligegeo field will be conducted this year and will see complete perimeter fencing erected around the facility.
This will be funded by the Oceania project under FIFA.
While in the Western Province the SIFF team paid a visit to Goldie College National Secondary School.
Goldie College is the partner school in the LEARN&play Project for the Western region of Solomon Islands.
At the school Loboi did assessments of the dormitories that were funded by the LEARN&play project.
Loboi also conducted similar work on the LEARN&play funded dormitory and classroom at Aligegeo School.
The group also took the opportunity to look at possible sites for the construction of Futsal courts in the two provinces.
In the Western Province a suitable site inside the JFK Stadium area has been identified. A similar site has also been looked at in Aligegeo, Malaita Province.
SIFF has held very positive discussions with a potential partner who is willing to provide funding for the development of both futsal courts.
The courts will be constructed up to international standards to accommodate national and, eventually, international competitions.
Ngava explained that the objectives for the tour have been achieved and will pave the way for quick progress on ground work on the projects targeted for Malaita and Western Province in 2010.
Contracts will be signed next week with the construction company who will be working at the JFK Stadium and hopefully work should start around March/April 2010.
Work on the Futsal courts will begin when details with the organization which is funding the project are finalized.

FIFA futsal ref course opens at soccer headquarters in Pago (Samoa)
6 day Futsal Referee course taking place in Samoa
More than 20 soccer officials are participating in the six-day 30-hour FIFA Futsal Referee Course that imparts the 17 laws of the game of futsal, a variation of soccer played indoors on a smaller field, with five a side.
FIFA Referee Instructor Neil Poloso, from the Solomon Islands, arrived Friday and opened the course along with officials from the Football Federation of American Samoa (FFAS) at the FFAS Headquarters in Pago Pago.
The course opened with a word of prayer and welcome remarks from FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua and FFAS Vice President Sandra Herrera.
This is the first time the futsal course is being offered in the territory, said Taumua during the opening.
Herrera welcomed Poloso and local officials on behalf of FFAS President Iuli Alex Godinet, thanking Federation staff for their assistance.
Herrera said the course is important in order to provide fair officiating of futsal as a futsal tournament is being organized.
The course, materials and ADIDAS equipment for referees are funded by the FIFA Referee Assistance Program (RAP).
During a Samoa News interview, Poloso said that an integral part of the course is teaching and training referees on the 17 Laws of Futsal.
“For me, it is an opportunity to come to this country and assist in developing futsal…officials must understand the game,” Poloso said. “It is a privilege to assist the FFAS in their cause of developing futsal.”
The course consists of classroom training and actual management of a futsal match with participants required to take quizzes on the 17 Laws and complete a fitness evaluation “to see if they are fit to ref the game or not,” said Poloso.
The class will also show officials how to position themselves on the field during games, recognizing fouls, how to use their whistles and other techniques in officiating futsal.
“Most stuff will be very new to the referees…after the course, officials will be ready to officiate futsal organized by the FFAS,” Poloso pointed out.
Poloso mentioned that the FFAS is putting together a team to represent American Samoa at the OFC Futsal Championships that will be held in Fiji August this year.
Officials he said will be key in helping develop the sport in the territory and encourages them to learn all they can.
“It’s very important they work with us on this because its all about the laws of the game…they must learn as much as they can and they must go out and practice and participate in regular training,” Poloso explained. “They must go and practice.”
Poloso spent three years as a referee in his home country of Solomon Islands and has been with FIFA three years. This is his third visit to the island. He instructs referee courses for 11 a side soccer, futsal and beach soccer all around the Pacific.
He noted that there is a local futsal instructor who completed training in Fiji July 2-7, 2009 and is qualified to run local training — Avele Lalogafu’afu’a M.
“It’s important that local referees understand the laws of the game…futsal is a new sport that we are trying to develop,” he told Samoa News. “ It’s a little bit different from 11 a side…the game is very fast…I hope the refs put in the time to learn the laws…hopefully this course will help local refs to gain more knowledge before the league starts.”
Lalogafu’afu’a points out that they are still looking for more people to help by volunteering to officiate futsal.
“We’re still looking for more people to volunteer and help the youth,” he said.
The course will close Thursday. Participants who complete the 30-hour training will receive FIFA participation certificates that will allow them to officiate local futsal games organized by the FFAS.
Poloso will leave the island Friday this week and head to Samoa to host the same course Feb. 13-19. He then visits Tonga to conduct an 11 a side referee course. After Tonga, Poloso heads home.
Breakers in the NSW Super League Finals
Press Release from Breakers FC regarding the strength of their female teams
“Breakers FC’s reputation as a powerhouse in women’s Futsal was proven once again when, for the second successive year, all their girls teams charged into the FNSW Superleague grandfinal to be played at Dural this Saturday.
Last year the girls achieved an amazing victory when they won all 3 grand finals (u13, U16, and open) and the pressure was on to repeat this performance in the 2009/10 season.
Despite FNSW introducing another age group in the girls competition (u12’s), Breakers showed the depth of their talent by qualifying all four of their girls teams for Saturdays Grand Final.
Leading the way for the club all year has been the undefeated U16’s who finished minor premiers with an incredible 149 goals to their name and a goal difference of 142 for the season. ( U/16’s squad – Ellen Wheatley, Sarah Roger, Bella Walker, Beth Sweeny, Ariella Cabezas, Nic Drakopoulos, Sana Cook and Tess Olsen).
Equally as dominant in their age group were the u/14’s who were also undefeated, finished first and scoring 107 goals in the season. (U/14’s Sana Cook, Tess Olsen, Maddie Bart, Harley Johnston, Fede Frew, Sharna Barras, Isabella Rudolph, Georgia Thomson and Genevieve Ingham).
The babies of the Breakers outfit – the newly formed U/12’s team- ended up equal first on points, but second on goal difference. Showing tremendous courage and determination throughout the finals series, they survived two intense encounters to take their place in the final with an extra-time win over Enfield. (U/12’s – Chloe O’Brien, Hannah Dyball, Hannah Williams, Courtney Wood, Nic Simonsen, Sammy Grant, Alexia Guerinoni, Nicole Stuart and Lucy Coleman).
All that was left to complete a sensational season for the Breakers was the Open women’s heart-stopping 1-0 victory over Boomerangs FC last Saturday night, paving the way for the team’s third successive grand final appearance.
The success of the open’s side is a credit to the spirit and determination that prevails in the club, with players as young as 13 often stepping up into the Open side when the team was depleted by injuries and work commitments. (Open squad – Emily Doyle, Di Murace, Patty Murace, Imogen Carlisle, Alex Kent, Ellen Wheatley, Sarah Roger, Bella Walker, and Beth Sweeny).
Good luck to all the teams this Saturday.
GO BREAKERS!!!!!
