Vikings National Championships 2009 - Draw
ACT was never going with Vikings, what a load of bull.
Futsaldad used the wrong example. How about this:
FFA 15 Boys
ACT Cobras
NSW Thunder
NSW Lightning
Queensland
Victoria
Western Australia
Northern NSW
South Australia
Southern NSW
Vikings 15 Boys
um….
FFA 14 Girls
ACT Cobras
ACT Colts
NSW Thunder
NSW Lightning
Queensland
South Australia
Northern NSW
Vikings 14 Girls
???
Vikings 11, 12, 16 Girls seem to be missing from the draw as well, that must be some sort of mistake…

Well said Bob
Futsaldad…. I find it funny with the comparison. You use the 13/14 boys from the individual club titles against the state series at the FFA tourny. FFA aren’t even running a club section.
FFA Nationals Snr Men 9 teams of which 4 are NSW and 2 ACT, Snr Women 8 teams 5 are from NSW
Shall we go on….. no there’s no need. Both tournaments have their multiple sides, as Bob said image the sport in the hands of Futsal people…. man what a tournament that would be…. back to the good old days

Boys, Boy’s stop all that bickering, what do you expect from a sport that’s divided in so many organisations. Look at it this way, if the FFA kept their nose out of a sport that they dont give a ????????, and Soccer NSW gave back Futsal to Futsal people,
then Australian Futsal would be able to organise one hell of a national Championship.
But then again as long we keep on taking sides, that dream of one hell of a national championshis is a few years away.
Bringing outdoor teams coached by outdoor coaches from other states so the FFA can look good its just not Futsal.
at the time of putting together the Vikings Nationals there was a rumor that ACT was going to jump ship. Yes you are right, ACT should have been taken off by now.
Good luck to the Solomon Islands teams

Ther are 118 teams competing at the FFA Nationals. 57 from NSW, 27 from ACT, 7 from QLD, 12 VIC, 9 SA, 1 WA and some overseas teams.

Until the futsal community stop bitching and unite, futsal will not develop nationally. No sponsor or media organisation in their right mind will put money into a sport where the interested parties would rather slag off against each other than develop a unified sport. This is reminisent of the old National Soccer League with all it’s disparate parties until FFA reformed football in Australia.

There was some talk on here back a month or 2 involving Scott Gilligan and some from NZ about him taking on a role for OFC for Futsal…. maybe Scott can elaborate a little more… also I think his interview had some talk on it

National Championships?????????
In the 15girls there are 4 teams and 3 of those are from QLD, the other from Tasmania.
In the 13girls out of 7 teams there are 4 that are from QLD, 2 from Tasmania and 1 from NZ.
It isn’t only the girls though, the 10boys should have just held their comp on the gold coast as well. Out of 7 teams, 6 are QLD teams.
Seriously, how can Vikings call this a National Championship.
And as Simon stated, there are no ACT teams in the comp. Why advertise it that they are competing?

FFA Futsal will never be run by Futsal People with out FFA Football pupeteers pulling the strings…sad but true…training game revenue raising in off season …now that the game is going thru the roof in Aust why else would they “suddenly be calling a review”………… to find out how to get their hands on income from futsal

Frank we all know that the review is nothing more than a warm fuzzy. The timing of the review is shocking (over the Futsal season) they met with Football officials who see Futsal as a training game.
Lets hope the review indicates the sport should be run by Futsal minded people.

Isn’t it supposed to be a club side?Shouldn’t it be the winner of the premier league vs the best club teams in the other states to decide who goes? I understand the need for our state teams to have competition & that the cost might be prohibitive to clubs but the heading for this article is ‘AFC develops Futsal thru Club Championship’. This would also give opportunities to players who don’t make the state teams but play great futsal in a good, solid team, week in week out. And we all know that every premier league team has at least one player that should have made the state team & didn’t.

In Jan 2007 I was visiting Tokyo and watched an F-League match (the futsal equivalent of the J-League). I don’t know what the players are paid but the standard was phenomenal. With the score 2-1 and 2 mins to go the losing side took off their keeper, put their best player on as pivot/GK and kept possession in their attacking third for at least 2 mins with non-stop one-touch or 2-touch passing. And then went on to score and save a draw! One mistake and they would have conceded another goal. Players were all very young, super fit and super technically accomplished, although not in the more flamboyant/entertaining Brazilian style. There were about 3,000 paying fans (about $20 a ticket) and good atmosphere with singing and drumming.

The futsal league in Japan is semi professional. There is only one club that is fully professional and that is Nagoya Ocean. This could be a pathway for Australian players although the first choice for the Japanese will be for Brazilian players, of which there are several already plying their trade. There are also a number of Japanese players in Spain and they will eventually return and bolster the quality of the futsal in Japan.

It’s very funny to note that many of the kids who attended the ffa nationals in 2007 are now participants in Corey Smith’s Vikings Futsal Academy as it is the only place they can receive high level coaching in tsamania.
Jose- teams sent to ffa nationals from tasmania were organised by individual parents and also coached by these parents.

But what about the WOMEN !! Absolutly nothing. Wouldn’t it been better to scrap one of the Mens tornements and send the WOMEN somewhere instead. The Women have more chance of winning a world cup( if there ever was one) than the men.

Sunshine Coast Holiday Training Camps Jan 2009 (QLD)
The Men’s team playing in the FIFA sanctioned Asian Futsal Championships in 2009 will be the winning state team in the Canberra Nationals. Almost all of the Futsalroos who will represent Australia in the FIFA sanctioned ASEAN and Asian Futsal Championships 2009 will also be coming from the players in the Canberra Nationals. Added to that, the KL Fives and possibly Singapore Tiger 5s competition, I think the pathway for players who are serious about futsal must be through FFA.

The Canberra tournament would be the strongest of the two given the two strongest states NSW and ACT will be at that one and most of the boys FFV teams are very good.
The Tassie teams at last year’s FFA tournament weren’t too bad as individuals and they worked hard as a team but they weren’t able to maintain that for the full 40 minutes and the opposition would usually run over the top of them towards the end. Having seen the Tassie teams at this year Vikings schools tournament I don’t think there is much of a difference between the 2 Tassie groups, its just that the strongest Tassie Vikings team didn’t have the same level of opposition so were able to be more successful. The weaker Tassie teams though were dreadful. Sending 1 or 2 teams is ok because they’re top team or 2 were good but I’m not sure why you would send 4 or 6 teams in an age group, it just diluted the standard of the competition.

hahaha why would he play in canberra when any decent state team in tasmanian futsal is through vikings? ffa don’t have one single futsal coach within tasmania?
but yes he will be playing in the best competition available in sydney in january and will be looking to add a vikings national club title to his vikings national school title….
please can you see the achievements of these 12 year old kids rather than try and take the gloss off what they have achieved? i know that jealousy is a problem (assuming your tasmanian with the warriors mention) within tasmanian sport but please leave the political rubbish and the knocking to a more senior level instead of stooping as low as under respecting a 12 yr old.

Jose,
Are you serious mate?
What a joke comment that is!
The kid thrives on futsal and is travelling to Sydney in January and then USA next year (Australian Vikings Squad Rep) and has a massive future in the game if he wishes to pursue that!
He is fit, fast, strong, great touch and brilliant finisher both feet and is mature beyond his years and he has to read stupid comments like that!
He is also part of the Tasmanian Islanders Futsal Academy program and is a very keen supporter of the local Tasmanian Mens competitions so i would suggest his interest in the sport is pretty strong and he will play on for many years and will play at a very high level as will young Angus Souter and many of the kids that are coming through the Islanders Futsal Academy.

Scott - I use the term “forward thinking” as I have never in all my involvement with futsal heard or seen any directive from OFC until I read your interview. This is so refreshing knowing that you have plans in place to take the game forward. I support you and for the good of the whole region hope these ideas are implemented and are successful. Paul - Let me know who you spoke with so that I can contact them and confirm it for myself. It would be great to be told.
Premier - Thanks! The best is a difficult question as all players add something different. Over the years there have been a few very good players and I would put Lachlan Wright up there as the best at the moment. I think in the KL World 5’s tournament we had 3 other very good players in Greg Giovenali, Fernando De Moraes and Daniel Macor but I certainly can’t take credit for their Futsal development. These players made a huge difference to the team. As for the player with the most potential - Well there are a few but one player that really excites me is Chris Zeballos. He has great vison and the aility to to step up to the highest level. I think he can play for Australia for another 10 years. Of course this is only my opinion.
Mark - Well it isn’t really forward thinking as some of these ideas I had started when Futsal was seperate from Football. I believe they will work and I also look forward to meeting up with you when I next come to NZ.
Mike - Don’t worry, your opinion is most people’s and I don’t have a problem with that. Just remember every coach is different and has different ideas. That is what makes the game exciting, if we all thought the same then it would be a pretty boring game. As I said to F.Sala I am sure there are better coaches and worse coaches, I am not denying it. As for Quake you have to understand that I worked with these guys weekly. The other players in NSW I see when we play them. The rest of the State teams I see once a year. If I find somebody that I think is better or I have the time to invest in making them better then I will bring them into a camp. Of course the camps don’t usually last long and sometimes are just prior to leaving for a tournament. Therefore I usually go with the players that I am comfortable with. There have probably been better players left out however if they don’t “fit” into the team tactics and we don’t have the time to teach them it is difficult to accomodate them. I am sure other coaches have the same difficulties.
Paul T - I look forward to catching up with you as well.
Quinn - Thanks for your kind words. I lost the passion for the last couple of years I worked for Football NSW as in my opinion they really do not want to invest time or money into a sport which they feel rivals their own code. At least that is the impression they gave me. I have been reignited with the plans for OFC as they genuinely want to progress the sport as they get a direct berth into the Futsal World Cup. With my new role I know I will have limited time available for the Futsalroos so probably the FFA will look elsewhere, I wouldn’t blame them. My aim is to ensure the next country to qualify from OFC is at least competitive and in future years they are more than competitive.

Scott,
The fact that you can address criticisms and barbs levelled at you in the minority of these comments with such a level head and neutral manner is testament to your involvement in this sport being based on a true love of the game. The forums and comments are full of statements, accusations, retorts and petty bickering that do nothing for the sport beyond fracture it further… in a critical time where unity and cooperation is essential to it’s growth and future. No matter what the future holds for your position as Australian Coach, your committment and passion for the sport have played a large part of the achievements of the Futsalroos… well beyond anything that meagre resources alone could contribute. If it is indeed true that your tenure as Futsalroos Coach is at an end, well, our loss is OFC’s gain. No matter what happens, please don’t lose the passion, especially when you can take that and use it to inspire future generations of players and coaches to step up and take the sport to the place we all know it should be.

Nina - As my wife suggested I haven’t been notified of my sacking. The manager of the Futsal team whom works for the FFA does not know anything about it but I would like to find out if you are correct. So if you could supply me a name (in private if you prefer) then I can contact them directly myself to verify this statement.
toepoke - As I was there at the time I can explain. Oceania has never had a committee devoted entirely to Futsal. While in Suva, Fiji for the Oceania Qualifiers, Mr Reynald Temarii, OFC Football President, approached Brian in regard to becoming chairman for the first Oceania Futsal Committee. Also present at that meeting were other people from different countries (Vanuatu, Tahiti, New Caledonia) and members of OFC along with myself. These people were asked to become members of this committee. As Brian is the person that instigated the Solomon Islands Futsal Program, Reynald thought that he would be the best person to bring on board with his expertise in the grass roots field.
frags - It was a great trip & will live long in the memory. Hmmm! Steve Dawson.
Paul - I could possibly be in NZ the first week of December. When I have confirmation I will be in touch and we can get together & discuss old times as well as new.
1-2 - Over the years I have tried to help as many people as possible but as I stated above in the interview not all coaches want help or advice. If anybody wants help all they have to do is ask. I can think of several coaches who have contacted me over the years who have asked me for help or advice and I am more than willing to pass on the knowledge. A case in point - late 90’s Futsal NSW tried to conduct several up date courses targeting specific topics. Only six(6) coaches showed any interest. I noticed that Tim Genzo and Frank Rossi tried to do the same (or similar) utilising Rob Varela for the State Coaches prior to this year’s tournament. Again only five (5) coaches turned up. Another case - same period - I advised state coaches of certain techniques and tactics they were to teach their players leading up to the Nationals. Of the thirty-six (36) coaches involved only six (6) took any notice. Mind you I think if a coach is supposedly good enough to be appointed to a State Coaching position I am sure they would naturally assume that the organisation appointing them must think they know what they are doing. Also FIFA don’t actually have accredited Futsal Courses and I developed my own to use when I conduct courses for FIFA. As for eight (8) years - I have only been a FIFA Instructor since 2005. Jim Roberts was the National Coach for twelve (12) years (I think) before me and he was conducting courses during that period. Other International Coach Education opportunities - if you call questioning all the other countries coaches about all things Futsal then I suppose this would be right, as I have been lucky enough to be in the right place to be able to do that. No challenge - I have tried to impress upon the FFA the need to take different people along to tournaments as assistant coaches specifically for this purpose.
F.SALA - I agree that their are better coaches and worse coaches and as the job is unpaid I would think that all the qualified coaches would not apply. Correct about the courses as they are conducted all around the World. You just need to have the money.
Rocky - As I said I couldn’t put them all in. It was a great moment but if we had held on for the win it would definitely have been in there.
rosemary digger - Thanks for your compliments. Please remember I will always be there for you anytime.
If anybody else has a question please don’t hesitate to ask.

1-2 I can’t believe that that you have made the comments that you have regarding Scott Gilligan! If you have ever been involved with a team or indeed a tournament where Scott was the coach or you have attended one of his coaching courses, you would realise that he is both an extraordinary coach and fantastic source of information and knowledge about Futsal. And contrary to what you believe, always willing to share that knowledge and support new coaches. I know this to be a fact because I was one of those mums and teachers who put my hand up to learn , to become qualified and to go on to support this great game at every opportunity. Scott firstly encouraged and then supported many people in those early days, he visited schools and gave advice and help and most importantly shared his wealth of knowledge. As a direct consequence of Scott’s input I have organised and run the Futsal program at my primary school for over 12 years, have coached and managed numerous State teams both open and schools to the Nationals and have managed an Australian Team to Europe. I am currently President and a foundation organiser of the Taipans Super League Club and one of the organisers of the current Southern NSW State Team to compete at the Nationals in Canberra. Whilst my achievements in Futsal are not a fraction of those of Scott, I can honestly say that without Scott’s support and encouragement over 15 years, I would not have developed the interest and the passion for Futsal that has allowed me to give so much back to the sport. If you multiply my story by only 10 people( probably closer to a hundred) then you will have some idea of the influence of Scott. 1-2 I think you are comparing apples with oranges when you speak of other elite coaches and their selfish attitudes. From my personal experience nothing could be further from the truth. Congratulations on a stellar career Scott. Good luck with your future endeavours , your success is richly deserved.

I dont know of any futsal coaches who tell their players NOT to play football. But there are still lots of outdoor coaches (incl your so called “rep” coaches) who tell footballers NOT to play futsal ! (Admittedly lots of these are elderly, ignorant, and unaccredited !!!)
You can of course play both as many do in places like Sydney but its a battle as “football” sees futsal as ‘taking their players and much needed revenue ‘ ! That is why we question the FFA being in charge of futsal….case of conflict of interests ?
The percentage is very high of course, but that should and will change as futsal becomes a sport in its own right. More and more children are telling me they prefer futsal to football, now that has to be a concern for football clubs ?

It does sound familiar. I’m kind of curious about the percentage of futsal playing kids in Aussie who also play football and how their time spent doing that in winter impacts on their ability to develop as futsal players. Would you say lots of the kids who go to these elite futsal tournaments are footballers as well? Do you have many specialists at the 8-15yrs age?
I remember watching a Vikings tournament a couple of Easters ago and being very impressed with the 8-10 year olds in particular - SW QLD, Sunshine Coast and West Moreton all spring to mind. I remember going away wondering where those kids hearts were, in futsal or football. Maybe it was both, but I was hoping it was the former!

Yes nationals and elite comps are fine but we have to look at our youngsters and their development, we have problems in Australia with junior development, girls / women and of course country and remote areas. there are mixed views on how we should do it and who should do it……..sound familiar?

Toepoke, thanks for the advice, but no-ones trying to run futsal in NZ round here. We’re just a little organisation who’s trying to organise a few competitions and learn more about a game we discovered a few years ago - a game we love.
I cottoned on a long time ago that futsal is a game in its own right, and a lot of my energy is going in to us becoming as pure a futsal organisation as we can be, and not, as you say, be just some kind of training game for football. We want to play better, coach better and communicate better.
I’ve met the Vikings and was lucky enough to attend a great tournament they had in QLD at Easter last year. I’ve met some of the others (in NZ) too and they all seem to be ‘futsal people’ at heart. So really, i’m happy to work with anyone…

Wow, So I’m guessing NZ is like Australia as well… there are 5 groups trying to run Futsal.
Provocative… maybe, but was just a tonge in cheek comment. hey it drew a response.
I’ll give you some advice, don’t let Football fool you into thinking they have the best interest of Futsal in hand. At the end of the day they are Football people and see the “SPORT” of Futsal as nothing more than a training game for Football. In Oz I’ve been involved with the (now) FFA and Vikings and Vikings are streaks ahead. sure there are people who want to knock the tall poppy but I believe it’s more out of envy. Hell I’ve been to meetings where on the agenda it was, How to Bring Down the Vikings….. They do a great job have lots to offer and recognise it’s not all about the elite.

Toepoke - I guess you like being provocative! Did you read my previous post…I was kind of hoping I’d explained why we went for a short game format for this little competition. Like I said, its a compromise, a one-off, but one we can live with since all our other comps are done the ‘right’ way. So if the kids are running the game - its only for two nights, we’ll survive… For some of them, its their first ever game.
Anyway, there’s plenty to be positive about in NZ. Vikings do a great a job, and so do Capital Futsal, Brazilian Futsal School, East City and hopefully, us.

Vikings seem to be big in New Zealand why don’t you get them onboard. They have leagues and tournaments all through NZ along with teams traveling and touring.
I read an article on here about the NZ School titles in Queenstown recently … looked quite big plus the word is the Vikings Futsal cup for men and womens was very good.
I also read there is a Brazilian over doing a coaching course in Feb on their website. So why are you trying to do small things on your own when you could do big things with the Vikings?

F-SALA I think you might be overly critical here. We run plenty of futsal tournaments and leagues with games of normal duration for kids and adults. This one’s a little bit different cause we’ve got very limited court time and the 10 teams all wanted to play each other once. Its a compromise, but one we can live with. For some of these kids, by the way, it will be their first ever game of futsal tonight. Its not a big deal - I was surprised our little tournament even got a mention on this site to be honest. So hopefully you can see where we’re coming from by now…just getting a few schools together to play a futsal tournament is an achievement in itself around this neck of the woods, believe me.
Re: coaching- we’re not Vikings affiliated so it wasn’t really an option for us last time I checked… last course they held here was in ‘07 I believe.

At $5per player for a two night tournament I don’t think anyone’s going to feel short-changed. And just so you know… the kids asked to play under this ‘lots of short games’ format - we’ve trialled it in the past and they & their parents have asked to do it more. So hopefully they’ll have a good time tonight and no-one in Australia will be too critical or offended!
And no, I don’t know Mr Gilligan, but futsal in this country is quite underdeveloped compared to Australia. Any articles/coaching courses/seminars/dialogue that might be available to us are to my mind, a step in the right direction.

I think Scotty did a capable job given the restrictions he worked under. Are there better Australian coaches than Scott - possibly, are there worse coaches than Scott - probably !
Will all the qualified, experienced coaches apply for the vacant national position ? I very much doubt it !
I cant agree with the coaching course opportunities though, there are many available around the world you just have to pay your money and turn up !

I find it interesting that he thinks there is no coach capable of replacing him as I think he is part of that problem. Over the last 8 years or so he has been the only Aussie coach who has had access to the various FIFA courses and other international coach education opportunities. Unfortunately I don’t think he has adequately spread this knowledge to other coaches beyond his closest allies. Based on my experience with other elite levels coaches in other sports I think this could be so that no one else would have the same level of knowledge and experience as him and as a result no one could actually challenge him for the Australian position.

Very droll..creating International size courts will reduce the number of courts available at the venue which may be OK id there aren’t that many games. As for the respective numbers, lets just wait and see. I do mean the ’state’ component and not the weekend ‘club’ competition by the way.

I think the Womens section at the Vikings tournament will be very strong. I’ve heard the Kiwi women are coming over. Word is they could upset a few sides.
While this …. we’ll call it a debate….. continues, I’m sure more and more Futsal people are wanting a pure Futsal organisation. Currently under FFA the sport evolves around Football and one Futsal team (the Futsalroos) some pathway!!!

Wow…. I just asked the question as at the schools tournament (sanctioned by the mythical FFA) it was basically NSW plus the odd ACT school. I wasn’t trying to be smug.
F.Sala your on the money…. is it a quality Futsal tournament if it’s just football sides parading as Futsal teams.
I remember being at a Futsal meeting where NSW and ACT wanted only 1 team from each state to attend now look at NSW. The greatest form of flattery is mimicking.
But at the end of the day this discussion is getting old. really it all comes down to, do we want Futsal people running and playing Futsal or Football people. It is my belief that the strongest will survive and that will be the Futsal purists as Football, although wanting control don’t want to put their hand in their pockets and if they did…. Football people will be all over them!!

An FFA loyalist trying to justify to himself that the outdoor ’soccer’ teams hurriedly put together for Canberra will not signal the end of the Futsal Nationals as a quality “National” tournament. 30 years of history swept aside by the bureaucrats of the FFA ( cant wait for that “independent” report ! lol)
Left Back you forgot to mention (or were ignorant to the fact ?) that at the last nationals NSW entered the same number of teams as ACT, QLD and VIC put together. IF you take out the Vikings teams for say Open Women , next year will see 5 NSW teams play ACT, Open men will see 7 NSW teams play possibly 3 others, I must take extra holidays to see that !

Basically every state will be represented except Northern Territory, maybe that’s the next region for Vikings to invade. And hopefully the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea will be back again this year.
Interesting that you guys say it will be just NSW match ups. Looking at the Vikings schools tournament in Melbourne, in most age groups there were 3+ QLD and 3+ Tasmania teams. In the 12 Boys 6 of the 9 teams were from Tasmania.
A typical Vikings draw: QLD City v QLD Metro on court 1, QLD North v QLD Country on court 2, Far North QLD v Central QLD on court 3, TAS South v TAS North West on court 4, TAS North v TAS Islanders on court 5.
