This is your opportunity to have some input into the review and have your voice heard. We strongly urge EVERYONE in Futsal to take the time to fill out the Survey.

Whether you are a Vikings or a FFA supporter, its very important you take the few minutes to share your thoughts on the sport we all love, so it be put on the right path nationwide and come out from under the shadow of Football.

The deadline for entries is 5pm on January the 23rd.

From the Survey Website :

The FFA and their respective Member Federations (State and Territory Bodies) are committed to growing Futsal across Australia. As part of this process, the FFA has commissioned Sport Business Partners to conduct a review of Futsal to identify how the delivery of the game can be strengthened throughout Australia. Included in this process is the opportunity to interview Futsal players and others involved in the game to understand attitudes and opinions on how the game of Futsal is seen across the club, state and National levels. We are interested in the opinions of players, coaches, referees and administrators and would like to include your views.

This survey will take about 10-12 minutes to complete. Responses should be received by January 23 at 5pm. If you have any queries about this survey you can contact Martin Hirons at Sport Business Partners via e-mail at martin@sportbusiness.com.au

When Sydney pastor Brian Codrington went to the Solomon Islands eight years ago on a mission, he didn’t expect that his background in futsal would have the potential to make the most difference.

But today in Canberra, Mr Codrington will introduce another generation of Solomon Island children to the national futsal championships. The opportunity is part of a program that encourages the children to pick up futsal balls instead of guns.

Mr Codrington went to the Solomons to work with Samaritan’s Purse, an international aid group, and to help the nation rebuild after two years of ethnic unrest.

”The mayor of Honiara said to me, ‘There are a generation of kids now that have grown up on the end of machine guns and machetes,”’ he said.

”They had lost a generation, he said, ‘We need something for these kids.’ They didn’t have any organised sport for kids under 14.”

So Mr Codrington one of the pioneers of the game in Australia who has an elite futsal development centre at Dural Baptist Church in Sydney began to organise futsal games.

There is still only one international futsal court in the Solomons, in the capital Honiara, so the children play everywhere and anywhere.

”Now there are thousands of kids playing,” Mr Codrington said.

”And we work with the outdoor soccer organisation and all the development up to 14 years of age is through futsal.”

Their program, Futsal Forging Communities, has been funded by AusAID since 2005, but it took two years to convince the Australian Government that it was worthy of support.

The program has visited eight of the Solomon Islands 10 provinces, with a ninth coming to Honiara to take part in the program.

As well as futsal, the program includes HIV/Aids education and information about healthy lifestyles. It will soon include a small business course.

”It really is a way to work with a community to provide a healthy place to live, it’s using sport as a vehicle to build a community,” Mr Codrington said.

The Solomon Islands has sent teams to the championships in Canberra since 2003. Last year, they brought an under-15 boys’ and an under-16 girls’ team and its open men’s team, which later went on to compete at the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

That men’s team was the first group of players to come through from Mr Codrington’s original program.

This week, though, the focus is on fun and providing the players with a pathway to grow through sport. It has also put them in a position to claim some pretty impressive gear.

Last night, the 10 players in the under-14 team made a stop at the Capital Football offices to buy new futsal shoes, which hasn’t always been an easy task.

”The first time we came we went to shoe shops around here and they were baffled, they just have such wide feet, they were saying ‘how do we get something to fit those’,” Mr Codrington said.

”It’s always a pretty big thing if someone goes overseas and comes back with proper futsal shoes, they are pretty sought after.”

More than 1000 players and 120 teams will take part in this year’s tournament.

The 2009 National Futsal Championships opening ceremony begins at 3pm today at the Australian Institute of Sport Arena. Visit futsalnationals.com.au for more information.

“I’m confident that our boys will have good results because we have been together for about 14 weeks now and the boys really understand how each of them played,” Walesua said.

He said last year three teams were sent for that same tournament but they all bowed out in the semi finals. However, he added that the team were prepared and they were all set for the tournament.

“Our opponents are big in size but we are known for our skills and speed. I trust my boys and we will hope to make it all the way to the finals,” he added.

The head coach also said that apart from teams within the different states in Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand will also be taking part. The team would like to acknowledge parents and supporters of the players for their support and also encourage everyone to support our Under-14 Futsal team.

The team is funded and supported by the Dural Baptist Church in Australia.
All their uniforms, food, airfares, accommodation and other necessities is met by the Church.

Star Sports discovered this after covering the recent Futsal league at Chichnige community in Central Guadalcanal last week. After the completion of the Futsal league, many at Chichnige said they decided to establish the league after seeing our national side in last year’s World Cup in Brazil.Futsal is a five-a-side indoor version of soccer.

Captain of Peace team that won the Chichnige Futsal League told star sports that many youths in the community have shown their interest in this code of soccer after hearing about our young Futsal team playing in the World Cup in Brazil.

“We admired our young boys playing in the World Cup. This motivates most of us resulting in our leaders starting up this league here,” the captain said.

He added the league helped keep many of them busy and stay out of trouble. The Chichnige Futsal League was completed Tuesday last week. Six teams participated.

This was the first ever Futsal league to be organised on Guadalcanal. Solomon Islands Development Trust (SIDT) sponsored it under their ‘Ting Ting Helti Project’.

David Costello will be refereeing at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, whilst Leon Markich has been selected to officiate at the FFA National Futsal Championships in Canberra.

The 5th Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) will be held in Sydney from 14-18 January 2009, and has been held biannually since the first edition in 2001. Football made its debut at the festival in 2007, with four nations involved (Australia, China, Japan & Korea).

The AYOF seeks to provide future Olympic athletes with an environment reminiscent of an Olympic Games and promote the Olympic ideals of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

Costello (27), Nollamara, was selected to attend the 2009 AYOF as a referee, having quickly risen through the ranks. After starting his career in Wollongong (NSW), he is currently in the process of completing his FFA Level 1 accreditation course, and is a member of the National Youth League Referees Panel.

The 30th FFA National Futsal Championships will be held in Canberra from 6-10 January 2009, attracting up to 2000 competitors from Australian state and territories as well as several nations within the Oceania region.

Markich (31), Maylands, has been selected to officiate at the National Championships after being invited to participate in the inaugural FFA accredited Futsal course (Level 3) held in Perth earlier this year. This course has only recently been designed by FFA, which will enable consistent teaching of the Futsal laws to all potential referees.

Football West’s Referee Development Manager, Edward Lennie OAM, is proud of both achievements and says it affirms the high level of regard that Western Australian referees enjoy in the East.

“As you can see by these appointments, Football West referees continue to feature prominently in the national arena. This will continue in 2009 with more opportunities for our up and coming match officials.”

Football West wishes both David and Leon the best of luck at their respective tournaments.

The futsal club, the only one to start last season without an affiliation, continued to do what it had done so well in recent years provide a place for youngsters to gain experience.

This week, three 17-year-olds Al Davis, Luke Davoren and Hayden O’Kelly from its futsal men’s premier league side will play in the under-19 men’s Cobras team under coach Jamie Richardson.

Richardson, who is also a Timberwolves player, said it was the kind of results the club hoped to achieve.

Richardson coached an ACT under-14 boys team at last year’s nationals but this year has taken on the Cobras team, the reigning champion in its division.

While Richardson has a team that is almost completely different to the one that took out the under-19s national title in Canberra last year, it’s still one he thinks can win.

Last year the Cobras beat the other ACT team, the Colts, in the semi-final before beating NSW in the final.

The new Cobras team is more of a development side. But Richardson has no doubt it’s still talented enough to win back-to-back titles.

”We think we are a really good chance of winning,” Richardson said.

NATIONAL FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
